US thinks Darwin was wrong.
Discussion
On t'box last night there was s story about a new Museum being opened in the states to promote the idea that God did indeed make everything in literaly seven days. Darwin was apparently completely barking, carbon dating of fossils is poppycock, and dinosaurs were roaming free with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden just 6,000 years ago.
Worryingly, the program suggested that 75% of US citizens agree with this - or rather, that only 25% believe that the Theory of Evolution is correct.
Quite how T-Rex got on in the arc without getting mighty hungry is beyond me.
This makes their re-writing of WWII in Pearl Harbor, Enigma et all seem like small beer. They are intent on re-writing the entire history of the Universe!

And let's face it - Bloomberg's credentials with the far right are pretty shaky given that he only became a Republican candidate when there were too many strong Democrats lining up for the Mayorship of NY. And he does highly questionable things like support gay marriage... Then again, he's seriously loaded and that seems to make you a friend of the GOP.

erm, could it be that "only 25% believe the Theory of Evolution is correct" - because it just is still a theory at the moment.
i'm not arguing for creationism or against evolution, but evolution is not a proven concept quite yet, hence its still a theory.

Thank you sir, for that comment. Americans, for the most part, that believe in creationism do so with the understanding that man is older than 6,000 years old and that T-Rex was not on the Arc, etc. Oh, and how did we re-write Pearl Harbor history as the previous poster suggested? We got attacked and got our ass kicked....where's the mystery? If you are talking about movies...well...they are MOVIES, not documentaries.....it's called entertainment.

I believe all the teachers who advocated "Creationism" be taught in mid-west schools lost the vote and have lost their jobs. In fact, even Arnie got his four contentious anti-democratic Propositions roundly defeated, leaving only Mayor Bloomberg's re-election as any comfort for the far right. Pity Arnie's ego cost the Californian taxpayer $200 million for a bogus voting exercise. That money could have gone to schools and hospitals.

the state of california expenditure according to the above quote which i've seen elsewhere is $50m.
the teachers union put up $100m alone attacking the proposals.
Eh, actually 'The Rock' was about an SAS operative being locked up for 27 years.
I imagine the person commenting on the rewrite of pearl harbour history is referring to the often spouted 'attacked without warning' mantra, when it is pretty well documented that numerous warnings were ignored.
On the subject of dinosaurs my dearly departed grandmother refused to believe in them. When I commented on all the old and HUGE bones she would say 'they could have belonged to anything'. Erm, yes dinosaurs maybe, 'NO'.

that's a misunderstanding of what 'theory' means, in scientific terms
In scientific usage, theory is not the opposite of fact. Theories are typically ways of explaining why things happen, usually after the fact that they happen is no longer in scientific dispute. The "theory of evolution" refers instead to scientific work that explains how and why this has been happening, it doesn't imply that it might not have happened (or that it's not still happening for that matter).
so, do 25% of americans believe that evolution has not occurred?
Bruckheimer! Whenever I see his name on a movie or TV show you just know it will be full of unbelieveable claptrap designed solely to attract 13yo boys. He does a certain style of maximum action, minimal thinking, they are usually successful though, lowest common denominator and all that.
If you want a proper WW2 film on Pearl harbour then look for 'Tora Tora Tora' much more realistic.
There was a czech movie called 'Dark Blue Sky' that came out around the same time as Pearl Harbour which has a very similar storyline if you break it down. Apparently Pearl Harbour was originally going to be called something else, some american state name, and was to focus more on the love story with Pearl Harbour and WW2 as merely a backdrop, but then Jezza had fiddle with to 'appeal to a wider audience'.
Fair enough though, I suppose producers like him are there to make lots of money from their investment not create art for arts sake.

That has the same crappy love story too though.
Anyway, this questionnaire was probably based on a question worded as 'as the Theory of Evolution is just a theory, do you believe it to be 100% accurate?'. I'm sure a lot of people would hear the word theory and assume it isn't true. That themepark is fantastic though, they do the old 'how much do you trust science' experiment of getting a log suspended on a piece of rope, holding it against your nose and letting go, only for it to swing back and nearly hit you. Obviously it won't hit you as energy is lost through friction and the log won't go up as far as the place it was released from, but in this theme park it's God stopping the log hitting you
There aren't enough
in the world to describe my contempt for these people.I think the 75%/25% split was just in Kansas. And, likely as not, yes the question was "spun" so as to get more people who don't "believe" in evolution. Relatively few people in the US realize that a theory in no way elicits a "believe/disbelieve" response!
The teaching of science is awful here, but, no wonder, the people who did well in math and science are not exactly lining up to take jobs as secondary school teachers in Kansas..
Tied up in all this is the anti-intellectual bent that seems to consume most of the US population. Remind me again how the hell we ended up the only ones to put a man on the Moon so far...
