They always seem to have a sale on - so anyone actually bought a full price sofa, or know anyone who's been duped in to it?

I actually spent £4.5K on 2 high backed leather sofa's 5 years ago. They are as good now as they were then. The reason I paid full price for them was that the colour I wanted was not in the reduced stock. Just Sage Green, a Shitty Brown and a Pinkish colourwere cheap. As I am going to tour Europe early next year and have sold my house, I have sold them for £600.

DFS stuff is crap in my experience.

Some years ago we bought two sofas and a footstall (poof?) from them for 2.5k. They were covered in blue material.

Eighteen months later, after light use (they weren't in the main sitting room) they had faded, sagged, and then one of them suffered internal collapse.

At this point I decided to put them in a skip, but before I did I had a look inside at how they were made. I was so gobsmacked that I called the neighbours and a couple of mates over to have a look.

The frame appeared to be made from cheap offcuts of 2x2", the arms were made of cardboard stapled into shape (I kid you not) and the whole thing looked like it had been made by a nine year old in a design tec lesson. Needless to say it had the structural integrity of a crisp packet.

Total crap.

ive a feeling DFS might go the same way asthe officers club who always had a 70 % off sale except in their oxford street store, and who got a severe dressing down by trading standards and told to remove all those bloody stupid sale signs from their windows.

Their stuff was shite at full price and shite at 70% off.

"RRP" my arse.

Where did you sell the sofa? I've always imagined there isn't much hunger for second hand sofas?

Thats how they can offer interest free credit, pay next century etc - and thats subsidised from the sale price. They probably cost about £50 to make and the rest is bunce.

True, you're recommended to leave them in random laybys so that people walking along the road can sit down and have a rest.

We looked at DFS, then decided to go and buy a properly built sofa from Natuzzi.

This interest free - pay nothing for a year thig is a swizz. Say your sofa is 2k - you make no payments for a year, then as soon as the year is up you can settle in full with no interest charge - but go over that and the credit agreement you signed when you bought it kicks in ... leaving you with 36 monthly payments of xx at about 29% APR.

I know this as I was looking to buy a new iMac by this method from a supplier and when I read the agreement decided to pay in cash.

I've no doubt DFS's set up with their credit supplier is the same. A large percentage of buyers would buy this way and pay over the odds I'm sure.

I was recently looking to buy some new kitchen units from Wickes (only wanted something neat and cheap to smarten the place up - it's being sold next year). Priced up all the bits I needed and, because of their 40% sale, the total for the units was about £400 (small kitchen).

Went back a week later to place the order to be told that I should come back in 3 weeks' time when that offer would be back on, as it was now a "Spend a grand, get free appliances" offer.

They alternate the two offers month by month to comply with trading standards and, therefore, the units never actually get sold at full price (unless you're really dim).

And I thought the "designer" clothes shop in Oxford Street that has been closing down for the last 5 years was taking the pee...

The deals they do are normally pay nothing for the first year and then 0% over the next 4 years, ie/ you pay the same amount regardless of whether you pay up front, pay after the first year or in installments over the 4/5 year term.
However, the costs of this finance are loaded in the 'retail' price of the sofa.

I bought a DFS sofa, and binned it 2 years later when I bought a decent one. I attempted to chain saw the DFS on into manageable chunks, but there was very little solid material for the saw to grip on. The frames are crappy softwood, and they are generally cheap and nasty.

Mind you, Mr. DFS has done well for himself - he's an ex-miner from my area, who started selling second hand tat furniture, which he then replace with new tat fruniture, and he's now worth £600 million or something. Nice one!

I needed a couple of polo shirts to take with be on holiday and picked a couple up for £2.50 each in the Officers Club. I was going to wear them on holiday and chuck them when I got back. The GF at the time put them in the washing machine instead of the bin when we got back. To be honest 2 years later there not bad, starting to pill a little but for £5 for two I don’t think that’s to bad. They are the only two items I have purchased there so I cant really talk

Surely the obvious answer to the original question is 'Everyone' pays the full price...

I dont think its too cynical of me to assume that the sofas are made to a certain standard and will be sold at '£***' set price - this can be called a Sale price or whatever cant it!? ie - you are effectively paying their set price not their 'bargain sale price'?
