Cutting down on booze – ideas
Discussion
I’m spending far too much money on booze and silly things I pay for when I get pissed plus I’m fed up going to work (often late) with a hangover two or three mornings a week. Anyone got any sensible ideas for cutting down?
I don’t want to stop altogether so going on the wagon’s out but I want to moderate it a bit more, particularly during the week.
One idea I had was just to take out enough cash for a sensible night out and leave my credit and cash point cards at home. Anyone else done anything similar?

Don't get into 'Rounds' with other people, so you aren't obliged to get another drink every few minutes.
Try arriving late, leaving early. Might miss out on a few drinks, but still be part of most of the evening.
Switch to soft drinks (either alternating with proper drinks, or be the designated driver one night per week).
Switch to a different drink that you can moderate better than your usual beverage.

Sensible ideas
Eat before you go out, A bowl of pasta or noodles or something.
Don't eat after closing time unless its a weekend.
Take your money for a night out with you and £20 emergency money (for a taxi home)
Make your last drink in the pub a soft drink - so I tend to drink normally until about 10:00 and then have a couple of soft drinks before closing time.
Only drink one thing all night - if you start on lager - just drink lager.
If you are drinking shots - stick to one type - ie all sambuca or all tequila - don't mix them up.
Pint of water befoe going to bed, with one aspirin - same again first thing in the morning. Have a hot shower when you wake - but just before you get out - turn it to freezing cold - moves the blood round....

Try drinking less.
How about driving to the venue so you can only have the one?

all good ideas on how not to get pissed too fast or reduce hangovers but I got the idea the lad actually wanted to cut down not increase his drinking ability
I managed to keep of the booze mid week for four and a half months at the start of the year, which is a major achievement for me. I did so because I needed to be more responsible having a new business to run. If you don't keep it in the house that will help if you have no will power. As for going out, I would restrict the amount of cash I took out and keep the cards at home.
I found a good method of cutting down.
Find a select few drinks you really really like, ie a British real ale, European import lager, single malt Scotch, non-house wine etc.
Inevitably, it'll be more expensive than the 'pile em high, sell em cheap' stuff you're no doubt guzzling masses of every night. Also, the bar will likely as not only have one or two of them, automatically limiting your choices. Point is, once you've become accustomed to having a night on whatever your chosen tipple is, you won't accept anything else. I used to drink loads of lager and anything would do, but I only touch it now if it comes from the continent, which inevitably costs twice as much, but I don't mind.
So, before you go out, plan how many drinks you're going to have and withdraw just enough, plus a little bit more for a taxi.
If you're a takeaway addict like I used to be, only budget £1.50 extra. It'll only get you a bag of chips, which will satisfy your drunken cholesterol cravings but won't run to a mystery meat burger or organ donor kebab.
Follow this plan for a while and you'll find that, on an occasion when you do actually have a bit more money in your pocket, you won't want to go back to the excessive binge even if you can afford it.
Bombard yourself with quality, and the quantity will become unimportant.

Without wishing to start the 'How much is too much?' debate off again, how much are you drinking when you do and how often are you drinking?
According to the Govt. we are all a bunch of pissheads anyway.
Most nights half to 2/3 bottle of red wine with dinner and then 4-6 pints of lager afterwards. Probably about 3-4 nights a week. Other nights I just have the wine with dinner and skip the lager.
Oh, and if you want to 'cap off' your night and don't want to pay for excessive alcohol or takeaway come closing time, buy a pint of Guinness.
You can't rush Guinness, so when everyone else is downing two pints you'll be on just the one. And when you've finished and it's time to go, you'll feel like you've just eaten a loaf of bread and won't want any takeaway.
