Before I go any further that's televisions not ladyboys....

I've never had a television before and Mrs. Tiger is a bit of a numpty when it comes to techie stuff, so here goes:

We want to buy a LCD tv. In our area there is no digital coverage yet (deepest, darkest North Herts). The Panasonic and Sony units come with Freeview tuners.

Do we need to buy a separate analogue tuner, or can we connect the aerial directly?

Next week Tiger asks for advice on installing a toaster...

Info on Freeview Digital may help.
As regards the Toaster, technicaly, next week you will be installing a 'breader' as it is not capable of making toast until it has been installed, i.e. plugged in

Thanks Simon, but as I said we can't get Freeview in our area.

Edited to say: I said digital, but I think it amounts the the same thing. Like the toaster gag.

Looking at the specs it seems that they have both an analogue and a DVB tuner.

Best to get one with both tuners anyway as Blair wants to control your television viewing sooner rather then later

You're buying the correct thing, as mentioned elsewhere, analogue TV is being turned off over the next 10 years or so, so it makes sense to buy a set with a digital tuner built in.

You'll also need supply of raw toast to cook.

Just out of interest why do you want a LCD TV as opposed to a normal CRT TV.

Before you commit yourself , make sure that you buy an LCD TV with integrated ANALOGUE and DIGITAL tuner.
Due to the lack of coverage in your area for freeview(according to your post) ,I would suggest that is the best bet.

PANASONIC LCD TVs have both analogue and freeview digital built in and start from 23". These sets tend to be the best on the market these days , and featurewise Panasonic is one of the best on the market (better than SONY) in my honest opinion.

It is true that ANALOGUE tv broadcasting is heading for a gradual switch off in the next 10 years, so it's always wise to buy any audio visual equipment (plasma, LCD , DVD recorders etc) with freeview built in (and it has sod all to do with TONY BLAIR controlling the masses) , it's just the evolution of broadcasting as it did so far since the 50s.

As far as connections , yes just plug in your aerial straight into the telly and hey presto, enjoy!

Ps; when you start receiving DVB (freeview) in your area it might be wise to unvest in a "wide band" aerial in order to receive all the digital channels in the future.

Thanks Allnighter - yes Panasonic is also top of our list.

Cotty - we want an LCD tv because they are so compact. We don't want it to dominate our living room so it will be in an alove off the dining room with a couple of small armchairs.
