A friends brother had a stroke a couple of weeks ago, lost some brain cells and movement, but with therapy he should make a decent recovery
I'd imagine that the worst fate a human being could possibly suffer would be a stroke. Not the type mentioned above, but the kind that leaves you utterly and completely paralysed unable to move your body, limbs, face, eyes, mouth, nothing at all.
You lie awake, unable to communicate or respond in any way at all, but hear and see absolutely everything around you. It would probably be like a bad acid trip, or worse, your mind existing in a void for decades on end, days feeling like weeks...
Now what was the name of that stephen king short story, about the time traveling machine
Sorry, not usually this morbid

"The Jaunt" was the Stephen King short story in Skeleton Crew that I think you meant.
And yeah, in my thoughts thats probably about as close to hell as you can come while in this world.
If you want to know what it's like, read this:
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

Reminds me of the video for "One" by Metallica, based on some old film. Not paralysed so much as arms and legs blown off but similar situation.
Vid here
And yes, as has been said, thanks for the cheery thread
Bloody glad to hear that your friends brother will be ok though.

On the bright side.....
If BMW ever invent a mind control system for the M5 you could try a top speed record and get on the telly (see top gear thread).
