So a Labour MP is proposing a bill to ban first cousins from marrying. Why? Apparently 55% of the Pakistani community in the UK are married to their first cousins, and they have an incidence of recessive genes 15 times greater than the average. Apparently 80% of marriages between British Pakistanis in Birmingham are between first cousins.

........so evidently it is not best to keep it in the family

However I'm not so sure that it's any of the Governments business or that it requires/ deverves parliamentary legislative time/effort. It seems this government just cannot help themselves when it comees to baning things.

Good grief.

Is this for real? If so, then it needs to be stopped pronto.

I can just imagine the backlash though...

One of my mates is the product of first cousins. One look at him confirms that it really shouldn't be allowed!

I saw a film about incest once. It was great to see the actors coming into their own.

Yep it's for real. And nope the figures aren't made up. Actually according to a website Iv'e just been looking at a film is being made about the issue to raise awareness of the biological problems in the Asian ( Pakistani ) community.

It is of course perfectly legal to marry your first cousin regardless of your ethinic background, it's just that the practice is generally frowned upon, with some notable exceptions.

Yeah, but on the positive side you could invite 150 relatives to the wedding, which, infact, only equates to about 50 people.

Just reading up on this - its quite interesting.

Apparently, if the general family has always had a clean gene pool, eg theres been no interfamily shagging in the past, then the chance of a defect between first cousins marrying and producing are incredibly low.

However, if the gene pool in the family is a bit ed, eg the family at large have been shagging each other for generations then the chance of a birth defect and premature death start to increase quite dramatically.

So, if historically Pakistani families or whoever have been into first cousin marriages, then there is a much higher risk to them, than say two angosaxons first cousins in the same family marrying (as its not the norm).

IIRC things in the UK are a lot better than they were say 50 years ago. A few years ago I read an article which talked about gene pool expansion.
Over the last 75 years, as travel has got easier, people are more mobile and tend to breed with people from outside of their locality. The increased genetic distance is a good thing biologically. From a biological perspective breeding with people of different racial backgrounds is even better. I can't remember the figures but the amount of incest & direct bloodline breeding that was oficially recorded 50 years ago was quite shocking.

You only have to look at pedigree animals to see the effects of interbreeding - many of the genetic weaknesses in breeds are reduced in mongrel versions.

This quote conjours up all kinds of dodginess in my mind...perhaps it's just me...

"80% of arranged marriages in Birmingham's 70,000-strong Muslim community are cousin-to-cousin or uncle-to-niece"

Uncle to niece eh? I bet that ones popular amongst the uncles...

Really weird - I don;t think I would want a brother or sister of mine marrying my kid... that is just way too freaky...

Uncle to niece...... so that means that the fathers brother, marries and shags, the fathers daughter.......OMG! Well I bet it's interesting round the table at Sunday lunch.

Ummmm not wanting to put 2 + 2 together and make 4, but I can see a possible reason behind the high incidence of 'honor' killings in the Birmingham community...... as in 16 year old daughter with 17 year old boyfriend is told that she now has to marry her 40 year old incestuous uncle and oddly enough does a runner.

Previous posters are right a trip to the children's ward in any large city will show disproprtionate numbers of asian youngsters. Some have syndromes which are unique to just a few families worldwide and some so obscure as yet to be classified. So Why do people marry 1st cousins??????

Most will probably come up with religion as an excuse.

BS - IMO most likely culprit is the practise of giving dowries. Means if you're 'unlucky' enough to have a daughter you're only handing over a big chunk of cash to your brother. Another reason is to exert control over younger generation keeping the power in the hands of older family members. For the most part the participants have little choice to accede, be forced or rejected by their family and community or have their alternate choice perforated in a car in Oxford.

I'm all for a good knees up and loads of presents but trading your children like cattle is unnecessary in a modern country with generous welfare.

I think changing the law would improve the freedom of those who are really affetced by this.
