Have you never seen Big Brother? You could convince some people they're in space with a tin of black matt paint and a pot of Tippex and the theme to Star Wars playing in the background.

Yeah but think of the intellect of the sort of people who volunteer for these programs, they wont even know what gravity is, and even if one of them does, just tell them you have an anitgravity machine that fixes that and they will believe it for long enough to make them look as stupid as they are

Yes but would the ritual humiliation of the terminally moronic make for particularly good entertainment? I mean if you can walk and breathe at the same time you are not going to fall for it are you,- and in next weeks program we convince two cabbages and a carrot that they are trapped in a sunken nuclear submarine - that sort of thing.

A TV reality show will dupe a group of wannabes into believing they have been blasted into space.

Nine Britons will be told they are to visit the final frontier as tourists in the new Channel 4 series Space Cadets.

They believe they are undergoing intensive training in Russia but in reality they will be at a disused UK airbase. Their shuttle will be a Hollywood film set.

Channel 4 boss Julian Bellamy said: "It's the biggest practical joke in TV history." The series, hosted by Johnny Vaughan, begins on December 7.

That news item is talking in the future tense, so it hasn't yet been filmed. so what if they read the Daily Mirror, they'll know all about it. If not they soon will.

Apparantly they are going to be repeatedly told (with loads of "here comes the science bit" pseudo-physics) that gravity still works in near-earth orbit where they are going to be, and true weighlessness only occurs in high orbit / deep space. Or some crap like that anyway.

Oh, I agree, totally. I abhor these types of programs.

However, I'll be keeping a close eye on the progress of this one incase they have ideas about introducing a murderous alien or the possibility of convincing them that they're crashing in the sun before turning up the central heating to maximum.

Now THAT would be TV.
