LONDON (Reuters) - A 62-year-old man, suspected of being a serial paedophile, was jailed on Thursday after admitting offering a young girl cocaine as part of his attempts to groom her for sex.
Victor Kelly was given an 8-year prison term at Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court after he admitted trying to groom the 12-year-old victim, supplying her with cocaine and indecently assaulting her.
Kelly is a ruthless man who presents a real threat to children. I am hugely gratified to know that he will be behind bars for a very long time," said Detective Chief Inspector Matt Sarti.
"Any individual who sexually assaults children is a danger to society but what makes Kelly's offences all the more shocking is that he was supplying cocaine to a 12-year-old girl in an effort to make her even more vulnerable."
Kelly, who was under investigation in March as part of a covert operation by the Metropolitan Police's paedophile unit, was seen by officers taking the victim and another girl to his home in Hayes, west London.
The following day, the two girls returned to his house but were turned away by officers who told them to go to school. They cam back an hour later when uniformed officers moved in and removed them from the house.
But the next day Kelly picked up the 12-year-old in his car and tried to persuade her to have sex with him even though she had told him she did not want to lose her virginity.
The conversation also revealed that Kelly had supplied the girl with "milk" -- cocaine -- and that she could have as much "milk" as she wanted if she came to live with him. The girl also revealed he had kissed and groped her.
Police intervened and took the victim home, but two days later the 12-year-old with two other girls met Kelly at a burger bar and were later seen approaching his house. Police then moved in and arrested him.
Sarti said officers believed Kelly had targeted girls in his local area for years, grooming the children and their families by using gifts to gain their trust before sexually abusing the children.
"I strongly believe that Kelly is a serial groomer and abuser of children who has preyed on other young girls in the past," he said.

e.Elastic band and two half bricks to be issued to his cellmate and perhaps justice can be seen to have been done.
Sometimes it genuinely scares me that people like this are out there, and will be out there again after serving sentence. (Due to his age, perhaps not, but were he 40, hed have been released at some point before dying of old age...)

Pointless putting him in prison, the guy needs two things, an operation on his genitals, and an operation on his brain to correct what is obviously not right up there.
I think that this is the treatment he is likely to receive in prison from the other cons when they hear why it is they are enjoying the pleasure of his company...
What is the scarier fact is the reporting bias that goes into this sort of story.
70% of child murders are committed by the parents. (see Gunn and Taylor, forensic Psychiatry, oUP).
The vast majority of child sexual abuse (above 90%) is committed by relatives, friends or other people very well known to the child. Most of this, in turn, is by forst degree relatives- brother, father, mother.
This is not reported as much, because of a much scarier contention- we are afraid of the enemy within.
