Not since Cock Robin has the death of a tiny bird caused such emotion.

The shooting of a sparrow on the set of a Dutch world record domino-toppling attempt sparked outrage among animal lovers and led to threats to staff.

TV firm Endemol said it felt "terrible" about the killing. The head of a bird protection agency appealed for calm.

A special website received thousands of messages of condolence, but some say the bird did not do itself any favours by knocking over 23,000 dominoes.

The bird's detour into the exhibition centre in the northern city of Leeuwarden earlier this week proved disastrous. Staff had spent weeks setting up four million dominoes.

The bird's fate was sealed when it knocked over 23,000 and organisers feared it could knock down more. An exterminator cornered the sparrow and shot it.

...

poor little sparrow, but I'm pretty impressed it managed to knock down 23,000 dominos!

If I was building domino chains that long I would leave gaps to ensure that if any where knocked over while under construction the damage would be limited (Only inserting the last dominoes to prime the mechanism before it was ready to go), just seems logical as you can guarantee at some stage something will go wrong with something that complex

Sort of a bit senseless killing a bird for no other reason than to achieve a world record really IMO.

I'm assuming that this is what they did... thats why it knocked over only 83,000 The chain was 4,155,476 dominos long.

Oh, how the Dutch manage to get well-known on the world stage.

Both the domino 'fans' and bird protectionists are idiots of the highest order. They even send death threats to the guy shooting the bird of which there are about 1 million in Holland. Christ. It's just a fing bird!

BTW: The domino guys are of the level of your local chav-tastic Brits.

I just wish they could collect both sides in the hall during that stunning display of bland-ness and just drop a bomb on the whole thing.

Now I know why I left Holland.

Stategic Marketing. Contract till Feb. 2006, and after that, no clue. Thinking about maybe going to the UK for a bit, but I'll see.

I read about that domino stuff and it just makes me embarassed to be Dutch. Sometimes you wonder if people really don't have anything else to do with their life.

So I just hang out here and have a good time
