Cover versions that work ...
Discussion
Generally I don't go for cover versions, but some just work and the artist makes themn "their own". Hearing kiddies refer to originals as cover versions is a hilarious sport in its own right, and no doubt some will turn up here, but which covers to you think fit into this category?
As a starter for ten, I think Billy Idol pretty much made Monie Monie his own. Just been playing on Luxemburg which is what got me wondering.
For comparison (covers that just don't) you can't go far wrong with Bridge Over Troubled Waters by Mariah Carey.

I'm sure that I'll be shot down in flames but I would put forward any song by Bob Dylan - every version of one of his songs has IMHO been vastly better than the original .
except of course that fcking travesty of a performance by Alanis Morrisette on the UK Hall of Fame the other night!

Soft Cell with Tainted Love.
Oh
Prefer the Maralyn Manson version, or one on my compuer with the artist as 'Punk Cover'. In fact, I prefer lots of the punk version of songs, Build Me Up Buttercup, NOFX with Stand by Me and A New Fund Glory with My Heart Will Go On (yes, the Celine Dion song
) stand out from the others. The Mission's version of The Osmonds Crazy Horses.
They turned a cheesy '70s glitterpop teenybop song into a heavy metal anthem that works the crazy horses under the right foot as well.
Apparently the song's actually about muscle cars (it wasn't written by the Osmonds), so it makes far more sense with a bit of thump'n'growl behind it.

Quite! as I once said to Mr Almond, 'That's quite a thirst you've got there, young man'*
I also think that the Tainted Love 12" version is one of the best 12"s ever!

I think the Welshman Tom Jones can do anybody's song better. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I respect the singers who actually have a voice as opposed to the "video looks and synthesized voice" approach. He can sing and, being 65 years old, makes it all the more impressive to me.
My all time favourites of all time have got to be
Pet Shop boys - always on my mind , probly coz I didn't know it was a cover at the time and(just seen someone else listed it) the extended version was gript
Deacon Blue - I'll never fall in love again - Bach. & David cover, sounds far better than the original, a bit gay I know but a top song
Worst cover ever was Guns n Roses - Live and let die - to me a perfect eample of how to wreck a good track
