Psychologists reckon that if your opinions and behaviour are at odds you can't be comfortable and one will change to match the other: cognitive dissonance. I think I have CO2 dissonance.

I was persuaded by Gordon Brown waving a wad of capital right offs to buy an eco friendly company car, and since then find myself checking the CO2 figures on new car launches, the cars neighbours buy and anything on Ebay that looks sexy enough to buy.

How have I shifted in 12 months from a Volvo T5 that had a carbon footprint like Kong, guzzling at a rate on 23mpg to be a tree-hugging greenie? Now I wouldn't dream of buying a big 4 x 4 unless I live 3000 feet up a welsh hilside and had to reach a burning bulding full of legless orphans on a daily basis.

I have started to recycle stuff and take an interest in world global warming/CO2 conferences and issues, and shout at George Bush when he comes on the tele.

I reckon it is CO2 dissonance: they have managed to change my behaviour and put me in a green car (CO2=119)so to rationalise it my opinions have started to mirror my behaviour, because if I didn't my actions would be at odds with my opinions and as I can't change the car easily then I have to change my opinions and other behaviour to match.

What next: sexual dissonance?

Good for you It's people like you that strike a healthy balance with people like me, who seem to have a cavalier disregard for anything containing the word 'green' in it, especially if the 're-engineering' of how we 'must' behave comes directly from government!

Speaking of 'Directly from the Government' there does seem to be a little confusion around according to this lifted from the AOL news feed.

Paragraph 2, the bits between the hyphens, seems to be somewhat off the normal message for example. And Para 4 is a masterpiece of journalism.

Baroness Young seems to have a keen ability in the 'stating the bleeding obvious' stakes. (Para 7)

Where do we find these people? And why?

The final paragraph is a classic of its genre. "Could shorten people's lives by 6 months." and "killing 32,000 people a year" (is that 6 months early or is that an additional 32,000 people? Surely that is a benefit in terms of government fiscal policy and hiding the pensions gap scam, isn't it?).

Presumabler a lot of clever people are paid a lot of mopney to produce this stuff.

Why?

Warm and stormy winters and hotter, drier summers in the future will have a significant impact on the nation's health, says a report.

The Environment Agency highlighted a long list of environmental factors - many which may fall beyond our control - which have the potential to affect the health and well-being of families and communities.

Chief executive Baroness Barbara Young warned that the weather and the effects of climate change were having a major impact on the health of the nation, with extreme events even causing deaths.

The agency's report - Better Environment, Healthier People - came after warnings that the recent mild weather conditions could mean Britain is in for one of its coldest winters.

October was believed to be one of the warmest ever recorded, with temperatures topping 20C in many parts of the country.

But in spite of that, long-range predictions have warned a big chill is on the way with the recent freezing weather conditions supporting such claims.

Baroness Young said the report's findings confirmed that people's health and their environment are inextricably linked.

"Recent flooding events demonstrate the importance of the environment in determining our health and well-being.

"This report warns that warmer, stormy winters; hotter, drier summers; more flash floods; and rising sea levels due to climate change will impact on peoples' health, with extreme events even leading to loss of life.

"Air quality in the UK is another concern - poor air quality could be shortening people's lives by six months on average and killing 32,000 people a year," she said.

They can't afford the pensions anyway, so dying early does the Govt a favour.

I heard that there is a new EU directive coming in that means that all manufacturers will have to have an average CO2 emmissions level for their range of 'X'.

If they exceed that figure they won't be able to import at all.

Thus they are all frantically developing low end hybrids to sell cheaply to the mass market to be able to continue selling their more profitable monster trucks and luxury end with CO2 figures around the 300 mark.

Thus Toyota are developing a hybrid Yaris so they can sell their Landcruisers.

So aren't BMW fu*ked then, as they only make quick cars. Even a loads of 1 series isn't going to cancel out a bunch of X5's.

Seems a bit random really. Like it matters what a *single* manufacturer makes?

Look at Ford Motor Co, overall it may work for them, but Aston Martin are screwed!

Bentley part of VAG?

Ferrari are totally fooked there then, but they are owned by FIAT.

Surely it doesn't matter. The incentive should be on cheaper car tax and fuel duty on a more efficient car, so thats it's down to they buyer to save money. All that having big companies making an efficient cheap car to bring down the average will do is mean MORE money being spent to develop models that not many people buy.

So, ultimately, buyers subsidise car manufacturers to build economically costly hybrids and advanced technology etc.

Actually, thats good, better than government taking it and squandering it.

Hmmmm
