Does anyone really care about him now ? OK he was a great footballer, he turned to drink, He knackered his liver which you would expect, but after having a transplant, to go out &
again .....
Sorry, but I have NO sympathy for him what-so-ever. There are others out there far more desrerving than him.

An ex-footballer drinks himself to death. So what? Next.
Is there really so little going on in the world that this is a leading news story? The world's gone celebrity mad. Get a grip!

I really couldn't care less.
There are many far more deserving people who should be given attention. Best was a successful footballer over thirty years ago - so what? Since then he has squandered his life and money and set the very worst example for others to follow. He has assaulted his wife, wrecked his liver and then another one that was transplanted and should have gone to someone else more deserving.
His is a sad and pathetic story, but I have no interest or sympathy for him.

Yes, he did get himself into the situation he is in, but his current health problems come from the medication he has had to take to lower his immune system and stop his body rejecting the liver. In this weakened state he has been more likely to get other infections, which is what the case is here.

Don't particularly like the bloke (without actually knowing him) and I guess he should have made more of his extra liver...But it is an illness, and I have a degree of sympathy with anyone in that situation.
Maybe I'm heartless, but its not an illness. Its an addiction. The idea that addiction has been renamed "illness" is the namby pamby liberal era we live in. If you have an addiction a bit of self control is what is needed - but why exercise self control when you can hide behind the excuse of an "illness".
He made his bed, and now he gets to lie in it.
I just hope that the second liver donor he had didn't deprive another person of their life.

Sorry TinmanO, but Doctors recognized Alcoholism as a disease in the 1950s.
It is a shame that Mr.Best squandered his second chance though, but being afflicted with the same disease I know how hard it is to battle with everyday, so I do have sympathy for the man.
Addiction, illness, addiction, illness, both ways to justify an argument.
If you think an addiction is an illness you have to feel sorry for the guy, if you think addiction is not an illness, well then you don't, and that seems to be the nub of the last thread like this.
Its a story played out many times a day, in many places in the country.
I guarantee that 90% of addictions in this country are on medical certificate and recieving either medical benefits or dole income because of their addiction.
Its not this guys battle with life thats so important although the fact he could kick a football somewhere when as a nation we had a football past worth talking about, is obviously pushing his demise into the pond life journo area.
Its that lives are being lost all the time, mainly through under utilisation, and we don't have much of an answer.

Yet another GB thread slating the man off and people saying that he gets more coverage than soldiers in Basra etc...
Is that a dig at me? I had a friend who was killed in Iraq last year, I have several friends still serving there, and a brother in Basra doing exactly what the latest murdered troop was doing when he was killed. Perhaps your inadvised use of the sleeping smiley has clouded my judgement, but please don't suggest my comments are boring. Thanks.

Surely a psychological disorder, not a physical disease?
Forget George Bets for a second- this is the interesting bit.
1.Many alcoholics are BORN with enlarged bits-of-brain-which-respond-to-alcohol. That means they are more likely to get addicted when they drink.
2. There is no real difference between 'psychological disorder' and 'physical diease' in many disorders. Think of heart disease and cancer- often seen in higher rates in people who lead stressful lives, or have certain personality styles (Type A I think Joe Public calls it).
So what we think about is a product of our physical brain, which is a product of nothing more than genetics. BUT on the other hand, our brain, or if you like , GOD, or whatever, gives us CHOICES- George best knew he was heading for trouble and didn't have the balls to fight it- he will die painfully and pitifully as a result. So ends the lives of many alcoholics.

I sincerely doubt that at any time since his transplant this man has gone out and said 'feck it, I'm gonna get p1ssed', just to have a laugh at everybody else's expense. Some of you should try and be a little bit more understanding, instead of condemning somebody who you don't know.
Here Here! The man was a legend in my view.

A legend? As in Hercules, or George and the Dragon, or Einstein, or Armstrong...or as in pissed up ex-footballer?

..and like many legends, he has an extraordinarily fooked up personal life. We distorted his reality and made him believe he was a god just because he could kick a ball well. And now he pays, and we laugh. Isn't that the public's way?

1) Your comparison to Best and our Soldiers is a bit non-sensicle in my opinion.
2) I too have friends who have fought in Iraq.
3) I am bored of George Best getting slagged off.
Simple as that really. I think you've taken offence for no reason here. I have in no way been derogotary to anybody in or connected to Iraq.
