Gym user upset at cover-up call
A sports enthusiast was told not to wear vests at a council gym because the sight of "big hairy armpits" would upset other users.
Anthony Ward, 41, said he was told by an instructor to wear T-shirts instead of a vest while using gym equipment at Horfield Leisure Centre, Bristol.

Mr Ward, a gym member for two years, vowed to continue wearing vests.

A Bristol City Council spokeswoman said vests were not banned but gym users are being advised not to wear them.

'Completely ridiculous'

The father-of-one from Horfield, Bristol, was undergoing an induction session on some new equipment at the recently-refurbished centre.

"At the start of the session the female instructor said that men should wear T-shirts rather than vests as sweat could cause the equipment to rust.

To me, an armpit is just part of the human body

Anthony Ward

"She also said that the sight of a big hairy armpit would put off other gym users. I thought this was completely ridiculous and challenged her about it at the end of the session.

"There are a lot of men who wear vests in the gym and surely the gym is one of the only places where it is actually required that you sweat.

"To me, an armpit is just part of the human body, I don't think it's fair to have a different policy for men and women."

A Bristol City Council spokeswoman said: "When we were training staff we asked them to advise people to wear T-shirts because sweat can damage the equipment.

"It has never been a rule or policy. If this gentleman has been told he cannot wear vests that is not the case and we apologise."

A friend of mine got cancelled his membership at Homolmes Place as they wouldn't let him wear a vest....they said they didn't want the gym turning into a muscle club. There weren't even free weights there.

Is Homolmes Place a men only gym, sounds like the kind of place tight sweaty vests would be encouraged

Just adhering to the no-naming policy. Was the best I could come up with

The gym I go to has no policy on vests, and encourages everyone to sweat during their workout - after all, it's good for you!!

At my local pit, you need to prove you armpit hairs are at keast 4 foot long before they let you in.
Then a huge Punjabi guy with aTurban spits on you as you walk in, and you thank him for the honour, and he says, 'you're welcome my little friend!!, laughing heartily.

That's more like it. Pure grit!!!

I go to a Fitness First gym as I'm a cheap ba$tard and it's on another level of pikeyness. You can regularly watch some members doing weights in jumpers and jeans.

Fat, ugly women at the gym upset me, so does that mean I can get them to cover up as well?

Similarly, trim young gym bunnies upset me because they're wearing clothes, so can I get them to undress?

That is just evil

How can they distress us like this by wearing clothes.

Better still, just start a new religion which states that all pretty young ladies must.... (insert preference here). Then, like the Muslims, you just claim offence when they ignore you, and then they are forced to comply with your preference/s by EU law.

Owzat?

How many people do you need to start an official religion? It'll be a tiny minority to start with, so we should get everything we need, because minorities always do.

hmm the religion of pistonheads,
instead of holy water, petrol although ethanol is allowed but diesel is the equivalent of demon spawned unholy water.

hmm what else,
bible, printed by haynes?
instead of a cross we could have a piston, or a big V to symbolise correct orientation of big engines.

hmm

When I used to go to the gym the rule was that you wiped the equipment/bench down after you use it as even with a t-shirt it can not absorb all the sweat you produce, Cant remember if they said anything about vests
