I'm looking into gettings some railings erected outside my house, but haven't really got any idea of where to go for such a service so am hoping that someone out there may be able to offer some advice.

The railings are to enclose a relatively small (alright tiny) front garden and would need to stretch only about 10 metres. They would also need to be not more than 1 metre in height to save the expense of needing planning permission, amongst other reasons and I'd also want them to be fairly simple in design.

I've only found a few specialist websites offering such services round my way and all seem to focus on much bigger jobs. Would I be better off trying a builders merchants for the raw materials, or indeed employing a builder?

I'm looking to keep costs down and would be quite happy installing the railings myself (my grandfather used to be a builders labourer so can offer advice regards foundations etc) but the difficult bit seems to be sourcing the railings themselves.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Second what Plug suggested above. Most small local fabricators will be able ot do you a set of bespoke railings at a reasonable cost. You will need to have an idea of what you want though, and in what colour/material etc.

PM me if you want any further advice.

Looking to do something similar at the mo, if you are putting gates on a drive the highways rules and regs apply interms of the distance of the gates from the road and from any garage doors (6.1m my council told me). It's got to do with not having to leave your car sticking out into the road while the gates are opened.

I make wrought iron gates and rails for a living, you can get panels, mail order fron Cannock gates, they've got a website. The problem is panels from merchants or suppliers will come in set sizes. The advantage of someone like me making them, is that they will come and suss the job out and make them to suit. Cannock gates will send you a free catalogue, also your 1 metre high is at the highest point, i am telling you this because you may have a small slope in your garden and believe me, council planners can be very over zealous.
BTW I'm in Nottingham and i also do spiral staircases and all forms of gates, manual or electric

In ye olden days, thy average landowner would erect wrought iron railings with huge feckorf spikes on top to keep people out.

Is it still legal to do this, or do they have to be rounded off and smooth, so nobody will skewer their femoral artery trying to climb over?
