Sliced part of my finger off!
Discussion
I had an accident at work yesterday (not driving) and sliced a chunk off of my finger (the part where the fingerprint is) went to hospital and had about 12 stitches to try to keep the skin in place (was hanging on by millimetres).
Anyway, it's on the left hand, and yes you've most probably guessed it, i'm left handed.
I have a fair bit of paperwork to fill out for work, alot of driving, etc etc.
Has anyone ever had a similar thing happen and how did they cope?? (it's annoying me already and it's only been one day)
BTW nurse told me to keep dressing on for 7 days and that it may not take after that so may have to keep it dressed until skin grows back.

Lucky sod. Im right handed and always manage to damage my left, leaving me perfectly able to write at school! The last time was trying to undo a badly rusted nut on the Land rover, ratchet gear stripped, and my hand hit the inner wing, and i took the tops off all four knuckles. Boy, did i swear.

It's the middle finger so not so easy to keep out the way (plus the dressing on it is OTT)
I drive a astra van for work ......... not enough room under handbrake with bandage on.
To get reverse it has the bit under the gearknob you have to lift up .... i usually have gear lever between index finger and middle finger.

Just grab the hole thing like VBH does and lift it with thumb and fore-finger. Use your right hand for the handbrake and just hold it on the clutch (its a company vehicle?) or footbrake.

Ive got a gruesome scar on my forearm (which 7 times out of 10, I can convince someone was the result of an attack by a samuari sword weilding thug) Again, total loss of flesh and skin all held on by a mm of thread.
I was really worried gangrene would set in when they stitched it all back on. And it did. They say lefties are more prone to gangrene, if that answers your question?
sorry
It'll either heal, or you'll loose your print. But your finger will be absolutely 100% fine in no time at all
and other than the frustration of it all, you have nothing to worry about.

Hi Glyn, I have had a similar experience, I took the top of my middle finger off on a machine 4 years ago. You have my sympathy!. The hospital wanted to take the finger off at the first joint but a specialist didn't think it was necessary. I was refered to the Chelsea & Westminster in London. They were fantastic & rebuilt the end of my finger as far as they were able. I had to go to out patients twice a week for a couple of months for the dressings to be changed & it was a long haul but well worth it. Watch out for any signs of infection, you'll notice a change in the status of the wound (& the smell!!) & get it sorted as soon as possible. The dressings were awkward & I found that the less I could manage with, the better. The pain was excruciating at first, I did loose the entire tip & a tiny bit of bone.
The worst thing was being so cross with myself for doing it in the first place, I was really busy at work & I knew this was going to screw things up.
Anyway, if you want more advise, email me through my profile.
all the best chris
My uncle was taking a short-cut through a chemical works decades ago when he realised there was a guard dog chasing him. He scrambled over a chain-link fence that was topped with barbed wire and evaded the dog.
Alas his wedding ring got caught on the barbs and when he jumped down he left half his finger on the fence.
Earlier this summer, my bro was carefully dressing a piece of alloy with a bench grinder. When he leant over to see better he overloked the fact that there was another grinding wheel on the other end. As his arm got pulled in between the wheel and the rest, the wheel stalled; he was able to hit the switch and then had to wind the wheel backwards to get his flesh out. It's healing nicely now; he has the strangest-shaped scar on his arm (looks like a Star Trek badge!).
My father was changing the disc in an angle grinder (also this summer!); he held the grinder between his knees while he applied the key to the spindle nut. His other hand held the disc.
His knee depressed the switch, the grinder spun up and took two of his fingerprints off...
I have yet to have a grinder accident, though I have set fire to a few things (including my overalls) with the spark shower...
