Have seen the excellent but not-entirely-understandable Akira.
Need to watch it again, I think.
Saw Ghost In The Shell and loved it, and have the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex DVD box set too.
Just need more stuff to watch. Spirited Away et al might be good but I find the darker side of Anime far more appealing.
Any suggestions?

I got the Akira DVDs for my birthday this week! 
I think the oddest Manga I've seen is something called 'Legend of the Overfiend', or something like that, certainly couldn't let your kids watch it!
Type in Manga on Amazon, and have a look, especially the reviews, they're usually a good indicator of what's good.

yeah - Urotsukidoji, Legend of the Overfiend.
somehwta immersed in the whole demons / sex side of manga, but actually really good. I saw the first 3 at Uni and have finally hunted down the other bits. tres cool and significantly easier to understand than Akira...as longas you can accept the many deaths by gigantic blue peni!

LOL, know what you mean! I did enjoy it, when I first started dating my now wife, these were on the Sci-Fi Channel, and she was shocked, never seen animation with blood/sex/swearing before, bless her!!

Akira needs to be watched in Japanese, with the subtitles...
tho the DVD is good - the subtitles being for hte deaf rather than the 2 previous versions of the subtitles (one with a black band at the bottom and one with out where purely the speech rather than the additional *engine sounds* *skidding* *chanting* that the DVD subtitles give.
Still its an excellent story to try and get your head around, used to get a manga mag that had the Strip Cartoon in it.... very involved.
Other Manga - Tank Police is good for a laugh, and monster city/wicked city being rather dark tales
