Hi,

Being doing some work as a contractor and on the pay claim form besides the usual NI number it wants my "tax district reference number". Can't find this specifically anywhere on my tax return - what should it look like?

Cheers.

IIRC... (and that's always doubtfull)

If you've got a number that's got a '/' in it then it's the bit before the '/' (fairly short alpha-numeric iirc)

Are you Self Employed or operating through your own limited company or an umbrellas company.

If you are self employed, have you notified the Inland Revenue yet?

Its a 3 digit number at the beginning of your tax reference separated from the main ten digit number by a /.

If you know the address of your tax office then you can find the reference number here:

Thanks for that - sorry, had a 14 hour day yesterday, didn't get anywhere near a computer!

I am self employed, but am treated as employed by several companies on top of that - I was a bit confused about the ref no on my tax return as it has 2 "/"s in.

The first number before the "/" is 120, which seems to correspond to North East area (which is right - although God knows why as I live in the SE )

Thanks guys, that was just what I was looking for.

When you have separate sources of income, you sometimes have more than one tax district dealing with your affairs. When Self Assessment was introduced in the tax year 1996/97, the "Grand Plan" was that everyone would have only one Tax District handlinmg their tax affairs and therefore, only one tax reference number. Unfortunately, this has not really worked out as intended.

If, like you, you have Self Employed income AND PAYE income, your main tax ditrict can either be the one which handles your employer's PAYE or your own Self Assessment tax district. It depends on which is your main source of income as to which tax district ends up being your main one.

At the end of the day, it is the tax district that isssues you with a Self Assessment tax return form that you most need to be aware of.

On the top of the Self Assessment tax return, you will see (usually) a variety of numbers. They are usually marked as follows:

UTR:
Tax Reference:
Employer Reference:

UTR stands for "Uniform Tax Reference" - this was the number which the Inland Revenue hoped back in 1996/97 would become an individual's one and only tax reference. That's why they called it the "Uniform" tax reference. As explained above, things have not worked out as intended. The UTR is the reference that is shown as something like "1234567890". This is, in fact, your Self Assessment number.

Tax Reference: having invented the UTR and allocated a separate UTR to most (but not all) individuals who complete Self Assessment forms, the Inland Revenue choose not to use it a lot of the time, preferring to use the NI number instead. Confusingly, they refer to the NI number as the "Tax Reference".

Employer Reference: if you have PAYE income (i.e. you are a director or an employee) this will be your employer's PAYE refence number.

Finally, over on the top right hand side of the Self Assessment tax return you will see a three didgit code number i.e. 765 or 238 or 610 or similar. This is the number of the actual tax district which sent you your Self Assessment tax return.

The best way to quote your tax reference is to combine the district number with your UTR eg 765/1234567890. Putting your NI number on any communication with the Inland Revenue is often helpful to them as well.

Hope that's of help.

Eric - thanks ever so much for clearing that up!

You've confirmed some of the stuff I suspected and I've learned a few new things too, thanks!

The thing that was confusing me was that my tax district number seems to be 120/01.

All straightened out now anyway, thanks again!
