Hello,

Advice again Im afraid.

Looking for a relatively affordable Digital Camera that has good Pixel Count i.e 5 Million Plus. But has good enough Manual shutter speed / f-stop & zoom functions for good Motor Sport Pics.

Budget won't streach to a Digital SLR, but I have seen the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ20 & FZ5 or Fuji Finepix 5600 or maybe even the Sony Cyber-shot DSC H1 all have pretty good optical zoom functions & pixels.

Does anyone have any recommendations or know of any problems with these options?

In my experience of using a "basic" digital camera to try and take motorsport shots, the main problem is the time it takes from pressing the button until the photo is actually taken. On a DSLR, it's instant. But on other digital cameras I've used, it can take up to a couple of seconds for the thing to work - by which time the car is obviously long gone.

Perhaps a mod can move this over to the photo forum - lots of good advice in there

I think you'll struggle a bit mate.

You'll need to be really close to the action as most of the small cameras have fairly limited optical zoom and although they're getting better, shutter delay is still a problem.

Unless you can afford a decent digital SLR just stick with an old fashioned 35mm film SLR with a good quality lens - you can't go wrong.

Most of the delay is usualy focusing..

Have a look around for a cheapie 'old' dSLR? BTW megapixels dont realy count all that much above about 3mp unless your croping a lot or pringting a3+, a dSLR's larger sensor will give you a better image every time.

Have a look at steves digicam website, read the reviews, he always talks about response times and focusing somewhere. And check out dpreview's forums/reviews too.

I have a Minolta X-300 Manual Focus SLR with a few lenses; 70 - 210 Tamron, 50mm Minolta, 35 - 70 Tamron 2, & an F8 Fixed Focus 500mm Mirror lense.

Trouble is I reckon that at Motorsport events 5 - 10% of my shots are worth printing so by the time I've processes & paid for the CD (so that I can play a little), it is costing a fair old wack.

Seems I might be best to save for a Digital SLR and some useful lenses?

this was one of the main criteria i needed when i bought my digi camera, for the nice wheel in the air action shots when we go hillclimbing/sprinting.

i ended up with a canon digital ixus 400. when you keep you finger pressed on the firing button, it fires off either 4 or 6 shots (i cant remember which) without processing them, and then sorts them out afterwards.
its got a 3x optical zoom, and up to 9x if you go into the digi zoom, but then you start losing a bit of definition.

i've had this camera about 3 years now, but there is a current equivelant on the market.

the other handy hint, have a shop around on the net for good prices, i saved over £160 on the shop price when i bought mine on line from empire direct.

Why dont you get the minolta dSLR and use your existing lenses? Maxxim 5D is only 400quid from digitalrev.

I've got a Kodak Z7950, 5MP, 10x optical zoom equivalent to something like 380mm, rapid burst options that takes pictures and sorts them out, manual control over all its functions (aperture, shutter speed, etc), mini-SLR shape for comfort, most of the things you'd expect of a DSLR - in short, a highly capable camera. Just a shade over £200 a few months ago. Would recommend you check it out.

I saw the main heading "Digital camera - any good for motor Racing ?" and i was going to reply with " No, a car or a motorbike would be better" but thought better of it.
