When you ask for his daughters hand in marriage? (Purely hypothetical!). Do you give up all hope, go against his wishes and face the wrath of him for a lifetime, or beg and beg. And what would you do if you were the father, and they ignored you saying no?

I plan to ask my girlfriends father at some point. Its the principle of the thing and I've always placed a high value on principle and tradition.

In the highly unlikely event he actually says no, he will be told that he was asked as a courtesy and to satisfy the demands of tradition, but that I would propose with or without his blessing and would prefer it, but dont require it.

This is the new millenium, not the dark ages.

Having said that, lets be honest, if the guy (in general) does say no, he's hardly likely to be your biggest fan in the first place. Either way, asked or not, the same guy who said no would be a pain anyway.

There's certain parts of your body other people can't find!

However, it is true. We don't live in the dark ages anymore, it is only traditional.

All daughters would like to think their father would approve of their choice of mate. Some fathers don't like the idea of not being the most important man in their daughters world.

But given time and a little give and take I'm sure the father would come round.

At the end of the day, its not his life, you have to make your own choices about what will make you happy.

However saying that, I would not like to be in the poor blokes shoes who wants to marry our daughter, he will not be given an easy time by her father.

Yes quite possibly, its a scary thought...........I have no idea who the lad is yet, but feel really sorry for him already.

Then again in my case I dont think he's good enough for his daughter.

Long story....

So his opinion of me, while I would like it to be a nice one, doesnt matter to me that much so long as we are able to tolerate each other and be pleasant.

When I met one of my girlfriend's father for the first time he tried to hit me. That resulted in me pushing him over, and he toppling over a chair & demolishing a table.

it usually takes at least three meetings before I get that reaction though

Good god!

Mind telling the story behind that one? I'd love to hear it!

Unless of course its about something a bit TOO personal...

When my brother married his - now ex - wife, her rather up-himself jockanese father insisted on going through two years worth of my brother's bank statements and seeing his contract of employment before agreeing to them getting married. So Pa gave jamie the big thumbs-up on the cash front....Sadly, in his avaricious fervour, he rather over-looked the fact that dear Bro' is a sexually incontinent, raving alcholic......

When one of my cousins got married, he asked her father for permission while he was 15ft up a ladder in his Barn, the shock caused him to fall off the ladder and break his arm. He said yes though..

Interesting question - one which I wondered myself 21 years ago! As such, I did ask my wife's parents' permission, but I said: "Sharon and I are planning on getting married and we'd love to have your support".

My dad's never been too keen on any of me or my sister's choices If you find someone that you truly want to spend the rest of your life with then I think that nobody will be able to stop you. Painful as their disapproval may be for you and the future Mrs, it is your future and your ultimate happiness that should be paramount.
