I ended up stuck in traffic recently on the A1M due to a gritter driving at 30mph in the middle lane whilst dumping an absolute torrent of grit..
Being held up wasn't really the issue, it was playing the game of 'Flooring' it past with as minimal paint removal/damage as possible. You & everyone else literally queued in turn to get past...3rd gear...floor it..whilst maintaining as far a distance as you could from said 'gritter'.
It was like driving a rally stage.....there was even a white cloud of salt dust, which if you weren't quick with the ventilation had you inhaling a cow lick!!!
Now i realize that if it dumped it down from the sky with Arctic proportions (or not) ...and all the roads ground to a halt we would complain "where are the bl**dy gritters" Can't win i suppose.
It's the 21st century...isn't there a better way of dealing with this by now...?

yes, there is a very simple solution to this problem. one which most other countries follow but sadley seems beyond the UK.

one answer is the use of salty water, sprayed on the main roads. it does the same job but without gritblasting the car as you go past the lorry. another one.

do not salt the roads, but only clear away the snow. which means that every vehicle has to change tyres to snow/winter tyres and you then drive pretty much as normal. this is the prefered solution in the scandinavian countries and central european countries, they should know, they get a lot more snow than we do. (if the gulf stream slows further/stops, we'll get just as much as them!)

i change my car tyres each winter and put on winter tyres, different rubber, deeper tread, hey presto...grip. we should all do it, so next time there is some snow we can all drive, not here, snow usually results in meyhem.

what's funnier is that it is nowhere near frosty right now.

If they didn't grit the roads, and it snowed, iced up there would be hell to pay. If they do grit, inconvieniencing a few drivers, there is hell to pay, and so on... lose-lose situation.. I'd rather they gritted.

~I have a feckin hole in my new radiator and urinating coolant thanks to a lucky shot by a gritter the other day. I dumped some radweld in but i'll need a new rad and a coolant flush to get this sorted now

I got showered as well, and I thoguht surely they could shake it about from lower down, ega foot off the orad, rather than throwing over every car?

I don't think more than 1% of UK car owners would be able to change all four wheels. Plus, you've got the cost of buying them, then storing them somewhere in a titchy garage - to be used for one day every five years. Great for snowy countries but we're not a 'snowy country'.

Why the hell can't we use the alcohol(?) solution that's used in Scandinavia(?)

And what do the Japs do? Their cars don't have underbody weatherproofing, do they?
