Urgh. Just got over the kitchen fitters and now having to put up with the tilers.
The house stinks of cigarette smoke. The toilet smells of old men in hospital and there's a ciggy butt end on the windowsil. Came home and could hear them routing through all the kitchen cupboards too.
They have absolutely no respect. Maybe I'll say something when they've done their job if I'm here. grrrr.

They were probably trying to steal your sugar for a builders cup of tes (13 sugars is average I believe).

Perhaps you could load up one of the cupboards with pingpong balls in the morning. Or vampire bats. Or flying daggers. OK i stop now.

Looking through your cupboards is an invasion of your privacy,i would ask to speak to the foreman or boss imediately and tell him unless this disrespect stops you are going to call a halt to the job and hold back payment.
This is your Home and they should respect that.

Was thinking about telling them I was pregnant and the smoke was bad for my baby. Would have to shove a pillow or two up my jumper!
It is disgusting and shows a total lack of respect.
If I was here more I'd say something but thankfully I'm not. Oh and you got me worried about my nicker drawer Gonna padlock my door!!!

When we had the extension done the plumber who came to fit the central heating gave me the creeps. He had full run of the house because they were fitting radiators in every room. He smoke all over the house, even in the bedrooms, and he would turn the radios on and re-tune them to what he wanted to hear. Not a big deal but it really annoyed me.

Would not have wanted to be in the house on my own with him, thankfully there were builders and electricians all over at the same time. They were alot more respectful of my belongings. Well except the chippy who dropped a chisel on the laminate floor in the kitchen then tried to sand it out, then hid it under something till after he had made his escape.

Don't put up with it. Best of luck.

You shouldnt have to feel guilty about telling them,if i was you i would have a word with your dad or if youve got a brother ,to get them to pull the boss to one side and let him know your not happy.
Dont let them intimidate you ,its your home.

I always leave a jar of coffee and sugar out so they don't have to go rooting through kitchen cupboards for stuff. Would tell them that the smoking is unacceptable though, as you don't have to put up with that. They are perfectly capable of walking outside.

Yep - always a good policy. Likewise leaving out a number of old mugs that you don't mind getting broken. I never throw out old mugs / freebie mugs for this very purpose.

As for the smoking, just say you don't want them smoking in the house. If you feel uncomfortable being so blunt, say you're asthmatic rather than pregnant - it's more believable and also less effort to maintain the illusion.

No need for excuses. It is not acceptable for tradesmen working for you to smoke in your house without your express permission.

I'd love to say something I really would. Mum and Dad see happy to put up with it but I think they'll be gone by the time I get home tonight. If it was my house I certainly wouldn't put up with it.

Oh and we have the old coffee mugs out!!

Indeed. However, Lois has already indicated that she feels the need for an excuse (the pregnancy thing) and I was saying that asthma was a better one than pregnancy. However, I quite agree - one shouldn't feel the need to make excuses.

Never leave tradesmen in the house unsupervised.
