Cafe Roux, in the Grand Amsterdam hotel (part of Sofitel chain) on 0udezijds Voorburgwal. The restaurant is supervised by none other than Albert Roux.

Gaucho's isn't bad, but is a chain with all that implies - ie you can get better. Plus we once (genuinely) saw a mouse in one, right there on there stair, in old Amsterdam.

My advice would be to get out of the red light and wander over to the Joordaan on the west side of town. Loads of smaller places which in general are much better than the standard tourist traps.

Decidedly average food and way overpriced, although the views are nice if you get a seat by the window (unlikely, given the size of the place). Staff generally unfriendly. And you can't tell that you're on the water once you're inside anyway. One to miss IMO.

Go Hard Rock Cafe, great food and atmosphere (if you like rock music) slightly outside centre but walkable from Dam Square

just across from the chinese boat is "15" Jamie olivers 2nd restaurant, same deal as over here.

Not sure if you will get in at this short notice. We went last month, excellent food - 5 course set dinner for 45 Euro.

Are you sure about that? I have seen one or two in Britain (unusual for a small dutch company) and I read somewhere that they are American.

Don't forget to ask for a Royale with Cheese and a rootbeer.

Can only recommend (as I did on the the other thread) an Indonesian rijsttafel - literally rice table. Fantastic indonesian grub - just pick fish, chicken, beef, etc. and let the restaurant do the rest.

My personal favourite is the Kantjil en de Tijger down on Spuiistraat - 12 minutes walk from Dam square down towards Leidseplein. Website www.kantjil.nl/
