email hacker/psycho ex?
Discussion
I have a very good friend who has an ex who has hacked her hotmail account, added the megabucks option and therefore can access it through account details, regardless of passwords/secret questions. There have been some strange goings on in the light of this. Messing with information, sending threats to new boyfriend, etc.
Can anyone add the legal position on this?
I figure that being jealous is a perfectly fine thing but there is a line where it becomes hassle and downright line-overstepping.
Cheers.

As distressing as they might be, your friend (and her new b/f) should keep the emails they've received. Don't respond to any of them but report it to the police and seek their advice on what to do. If he's this messed up in the head you have to ask yourself where would he draw the line and that, in itself, is quite worrying.
(If she has a pet bunny kept outside, I'd get it indoors...quick!)

Yep, it's definite. I've mentioned to her that she should change her account but it's a case of "No, I won't on principle".
Not sure what he'll do when he finds out what he wants to find out.
I wondered if you un-sign yourself from hotmail billing whether your details are residual, hence access. I suppose you could change them......
I'll see what she has to say. I was wondering whether there was a specific offence for hacking someones email account. I figure it is common as my ex was hacking mine....

I know from a dodgy workmate that you can hack hotmail using dos to set up a shadow email account or something and it basically lets you do whatever you want with their account. I didnt really understand but id get in contact with hotmail and get them to shut it down asap!
Can you pass me the details of how I can find this information out, my mate
would probably be up for playing him at his own game.
Don't take him on and don't do anything that encourages him. She should ignore him and his actions completely. Refusing to shut down the account on principle is daft although perhaps a little understandable. These people thrive on the response that they get to their actions, if you just shut down their options and ignore them they get bored. Retaliating just shows him that he's having an effect on her and after all that's what he's trying to do.
Edited to say: hacking his account just lowers the rest of you to his standards and to me seems a bit childish. Rise above it and he'll get bored.
BTW - this isn't psycho - some people have ex's that are REALLY psycho - she should ignore him and move one.

I would not recommend 'messing' with him, however entertaining or clever you think it might be. Print all the emails, get Hotmail to close the account and make sure it's all documented and then reported. You never know what he might do and it's foolish to try and provoke him because you think it might be funny.
If your friend *really* doesn't want to change their hotmail account, why doesn't your friend suggest to everyone in her address book that thay prefix any messages they send her with some kind of "code"? Say *** at the beginning of every subject line. Set up a custom filter so that any mail that comes in with a *** in the subject header (so this will catch Re: and Fwd: mail) is moved to another folder (call it say "Safe"
. Hide it deep in some pre-existing folder. Everything else is either sh1t, spam or other.
But that's such a Noddy fix - personally, I'd just bin the account and set up a new one - it's free, and all it really involves is updating your address book.
As far as hacking into accounts goes, yes it's illegal. But it's not exactly straightforward. Can I suggest the ex- simply knew the username and password of the free hotmail account? And then upgraded it themselves? And what's this "megabucks" account? All I can see is MSN Premium with extra storage, photos, antivirus...it doesn't really give anything extra for mail (except more user names, but so what). Now if the ex- used your friend's credit card details to fraudulently do this, then you're onto something else. I'm not trolling, it just doesn't ring 100% to me. Irrespective of that, a friend of mine, his ex-wife got a non-molestation order against him based on emails he'd sent through hotmail (and text messages), so it can, and is, taken very seriously.

If you try and access the "forgot my password" it comes up with a.Insert bank account details or b. What's my secret question? So, if you know someones p/w when you are together, you can give them the gift of the pay account (extra storage) and always have a quick way in to the account.
I agree, she should just ditch the account, but you know how it is....You get a new account and then use your old one still as that's where the correspondence goes.....
