I was chatting to a cabby on my home from yet another night on the town. Anyway, he started telling me how he was getting different MPGs between different petrol suppliers.

The example he used was approx an extra 10-20% mileage on a tank of diesel from BP over and above what he was getting from either Jet or the supermarket suppliers.

Is there likely to be any truth in this?

i'm a fairly recent convert to deisel, and didn't think this would happen, but i've found its much like supermarket petrol being not quite as good as branded ones.
if i fill up with a tank full of shell instead of sainsburys, i find i get about 50-60 miles more from a tankful.

So the cabby seems to be on to something here then...

I've noticed the mpg on the van going down recently, I have exclusively used supermarket fuel for a while, so I'll give BP etc a go and see what happens.

and there was me thinking the supermarkets would use the same supplies but just be able to offer minimal discounts for bulk buying - what the hell are they doing, watering it down!?

Very possible. Alsorts of potential contributory factors such as cetane, lubricity, viscosity, specific gravity etc etc
I'd have thought BP, Shell etc will be better quality than supermarket stuff. Hence the premium? I've not seen any tabulated charts to confirm this though.

So the fuel that gives you 10% more MPG costs you 10% more...? Sounds like quits to me.

if i fill up in thetford (local market town)i use super markets as they are cheaper, but if i'm visiting friends in ipswich, i fill up at the shell place as its the same price as the asda just up the road (and cheaper than anywhere in thetford!), so i'm not paying any more for branded fuel.

Ditto. We managed a change from 67mpg to 76mpg switching from supermarket to shell. When you consider little difference in price, it works out cheaper per mile from shell, and probably healthier for the car as well.

I'd be interested to see some kind of scientific test to confirm these figures. Supermarket diesel is about 90p a litre, whereas the BP over the road from me (literally) is about 95p a litre.

Would be cool if someone had a long commute on a free-flowing motorway, and could fill their car with both fuels on consecutive days, and tell us the difference in pocket change (provided they emptied the tank of the old stuff!)

Have you seen the latest issue of EVO? All about improved power outputs from different fuels.

Interesting reading!

Yeah but, no but, yeah but, Sainsbo's is about 90p, then I take SWMBO's 5p /litre discount off it and Shell/BP has to be blooming good to beat that.

Notice how we just accept fuel prices.

One day in the murky past I said to myself I'm going to stop driving if I have to pay more than a £1.............

a gallon. DOH!

Aye but thats for different RON values, different kettle of fish. I think the differences in diesel fuels between stations is down to the additives?
