Get out a copy of Agatha Christies "Death on the Nile" starring Peter Ustinov, will come in very handy when exercising the little grey cells in solving the inevitable murder.
PS. Lot's of cruises stop at different places so really depends on what one you are thinking of or places you really want to see. You must do Giza and the Theban necropolis (Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens), plus the Temple of Rameses II at Abu Simbel which was dismantled piece by piece when they created Lake Nasser and rebuilt in an artificial mountain, you can go between the temple and the mountain and see the gap (superstructure).
There are loads of other potential stops like Karnak, Luxor, Medinet Habu, the Rammesseum, and other smaller temple enclosures plus a stop in Cairo. Enjoy it !

I've never heard a good report of these. They all seem to end in food poisoning.
I've heard this as well.
Went on one a couple of years ago and it was stunning. The sights are unreal and TV and video can't even begin to show the reality. Karnac which is the one from Death on the Nile (the one where the stone falls from the roof) was covered completely in sand and had to be 'discovered'. The river itself is unlike any other I've been on and the people on the boat were fantastic. Every day when you are on an excursion they do the housekeeping and your towels are folded into a different 'animal'
Heebeegeetee talk to me about it on Saturday (i've also got some photos somewhere)

I spent a month backpacking round Egypt about 12 years ago so cant comment on the food poisening but didnt effect me when I went.
Anyway second the vally of the kings
When I visited the Vally Of The Kings in Luxor, Tutum Carmoon's (spelling???) tomb is tiny as it was built in a rush so isnt as big or splended as the others. But it was one of the few, if the only one, to be found intact. The contents are displayed in the museum in Cairo and takes up about 2 floors. Not sure about now as it was 12 years ago. best check it out.
Pick up a copy of the Lonley Plant book on Egypt it has tons of information about where to go and what to do. Link to book http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/product_detail.cfm?prod

I've done a few cruises and have found www.epinions.com/ to be a really good source of objective information.

I went in 2001 or so, Luxor-> Aswan cruise through co-op travel, 400 quid, absolutly excelent, no food poisoning at all, decent room, food was ok but got a bit samey by the end of the week (except for the camel !:O).
Some of the worlds best heratige there, Karnak is stunning, so is Abu Simbal.

All of this anal stuff is exaggerated. In fact if you do suffer the Egyptians have a medicine that clears it like sticking a cork there. Don't be put off
Odd thing. You hear so many stories about people being ill when they went to so and so and don't drink the water, et cetera.
In many cases people get ill through eating the food in the terminal on the way out, sometimes it's the food on the plane. When they turn up somewhere they are ill and blame the food at the destination
If you are going somewhere where they say "don't drink the water" people forget the ice in their drinks, the water used to wash the fruit and salad or the water they use to brush their teeth!
