Not that you good people would fall for something like this, but here is the text taken from an email supposedly sent to me from Barclays Bank today - see if you can spot the subtle 'imperfections':

Dear Sir/Madam,

Barclays Bank PLC. always look forward for the high security of our clients. Some customers have been receiving an email claiming to be from Barclays advising them to follow a link to what appear to be a Barclays web site, where they are prompted to enter their personal Online Banking details. Barclays is in no way involved with this email and the web site does not belong to us.

Barclays is proud to announce about their new updated secure system. We updated our new SSL servers to give our customers a better, fast and secure online banking service.

Due to the recent update of the servers, you are requested to please update your account info at the following link.

https://update.barclays.co.uk/olb/p/LoginMember.do

*Important*
We have asked few additional information which is going to be the part of secure login process. These additional information will be asked during your future login security so, please provide all these info completely and correctly otherwise due to security reasons we may have to close your account temporarily.

J. S. Smith
Security Advisor
Barclays Bank PLC.

Cheers
Dom

barclays never send out emails asking for you to click on a link or verify your details, so it is farily safe to assume that every email from someone claiming to be barclays is a fake.

I received this cracker from "an Englishman in Iraq" (a novel twist) on Monday:

Hello Sir/Madam,

I am very sorry to interrupt your peace Since you are not expecting to receive any mail from me. However, I was obliged to do so due to the importance and urgency of the message. I crave your indulgence, and want to reasure you that I mean well and that it is only for our mutual good. So please do not be embarrassed.

My name is Frank J. Smith, I am a Reporter and Photo-Journalist attached to the United Kingdom military. I am writing this message from Ar-ramadi in Iraq. We hit Iraq in May 12, 2003 and have moved around a few times building up F.O.B. around the western side of the country as well as missions into Baghdad, with attacks by insurgents everyday and car bombs, we managed to move funds belonging to Saddam Hussein?s family which we found in his palace shortly after his arrest, The total amount is US$25 Million dollars in cash, mostly 100 dollar bills. We want to move this money out of Iraqi, since it is a war zone although partially ended but the daily activities of suicide bombers is frighteningly on the increase.

I reached an agreement with the members of my team whom are UN officials and we agreed to keep this money to ourselves and then moved the box out of Iraq to Europe (we have also concluded plans to move the money with help of some diplomatic officers who are attached to the UN diplomats.with their immunity as UN officials they are not searched at borders or Airports). Now, I am in need of a reliable and trustworthy person or company overseas whom I can confidently work with since my work does not permit me to own a foreign bank account or any personal business until retirement. I have not finished my assignment and cannot return to the UK now.

I have the honor to confide this information in you and to request for your pleasure to assist in receiving and secure the money in your account, pending our retirement from service. You are therefore expected and advised to display high degree of maturity, responsibility and understanding in handling this information. I will give you all the details in my next mail when you have indicated your interest and commitment to work with me. Always remember that this is the highest confidence and trust any person can response on the other, especially when it is considered that we did not know ourselves before.

I hope you will honor me too. We can come over to join you for sharing and to guarantee that we have unlimited access to you before and when the funds hit your account. Moreso for an effective and easy communication I will advice that you furnish me with your phone numbers and other necessary details to make me rest assured that you are geniune.

I eagerly await your positive response.

Best regards,

Respectfully,

FRANK J. SMITH
Reporting from Ar-ramadi Iraq

I got the Barclays email and I don't even bank with Barclays so it joined the other crap in the circular file which gets emptied every day.

I can't believe people are still taken in by these emails.

What is the trick with the link, or has it not survived being cut & pasted?

Yeah, its hidden by the text which looks like the real link, but in fact fake. The real link is underneath this and points to some dodgy website in the far east usually.....

I had a spoof one from PayPal today. It looked perfect except that the first line said, in big letters 'You're account needs updating'....

Quite laughable really!
