I am off to Australia on 22nd December, and will probably need to do some work whilst there, and might need to email stuff back to blighty.......

Apart from using internet cafes, what are the best ways of using the internet, whilst in Aus?

3G/GPRS card? Might be quite expensive though...

Chance it, and hope there's any free, wireless access ports near where you are going?

WiFi enabled PDA/phone. Should be plenty of hotspots around the place to give you access, with the added bonus of free access if you find an unlocked network somewhere.

Internet café's and hotels will probably be your best bet. Unless you know someone that lives there with a broadband connection.

Lots of hotels these days have free/chargeable WiFi.

You don't say if you will just be e-mailing short messages or big files you've been working on on your PC.

If you are taking a laptop take a cable and a WiFi card to cover the bases. Chances are where you are staying (if a hotel) will have some broadband connection.

If you are just e-mailing short messages I recommend a PDA-Phone (e.g. Sony Ericcson P910etc). These work anywhere with mobile phone coverare (2.5G) and are perfectly good for communication purposes whilst having the advantage of being small. Just make sure you get one that *will* work in Aus...even some PAYG deals allow this.

WiFi via a hotspot will be the cheapest.

2.5G / 3G will be very expensive.
