I am going away soon so i thought i would just check when my passport expires.

It says :

Date of expiry 09 Mar /MARS 11

I assume that means March 2009 rather than the 9th of march in some unknown year but I'm not sure if that means i can use it in march or it runs out at the end of february?

why doesn't it just say : Date of expiry 31/03/2009 or something?

And what does Mars 11 mean? It seems to mean 'March 2011' in French, does my passport expire two years later in France or something?

10 years from issue date should give a clue as to which is day & which is year

I think your passport expires on the 9th March 2011. Because the month is written, they use the english and french words - not sure if this changes in other EU nationalities passports.

9th march 2011

If you compare it with the date of issue it's pretty obvious

ie it'll say issued 09 MAR/MARS 01 (9th march 2001)

Well you've heard of Ocean's 11, right?

And Apollo 11, right?

Well it's nothing to do with either of those!

If you renew your passport before it has expired the unexpired portion of the old passport is added to the new one, so if you renew 3 months before expiry the new one lasts 10 years and 3 months. Hence the out od step issue/expiry dates.

With some countries you have to have at least six months on your passport. It's a right pain in the neck with kids because their passports only last five years. As such they only last four and a half years. I've got four kids, so it's a nightmare keeping them all up to date - costs a few bob as well.

I assume there is some restriction on how much time is left on your passport before you renew it? I might try and renew mine before the price goes up...

Mine had lapsed by several months but renewal was straightforward.

You might need six months left on it when you travel, for some subtle reason that escapes me.

I'm sure you can renew it whenever you like but the Passport Agency website (www.ukpa.gov.uk/) says they will add up to a maximum of 9 months to a new passport, so I guess thats the practical limit.
