An office worker lost her job after just 45 minutes because she was a smoker.Sophie Blinham, 21, got a temporary position with Dataflow Communications in Somerset, but had been told to leave after admitting her nicotine habit.Ms Blinham said she was set to start her administration role when she was quizzed about tobacco.

She said: "I was just about to be shown round the office when I was asked if I smoked.

"I said yes and I was told that was going to be a problem. I asked 'What if I went into town for a cigarette on my lunch break, would that be OK?' but I was told it was not."

Ms Blinham was informed there was no position for her and she left after just 45 minutes in the building.

Dataflow spokesman Ian Murray said it was company policy not to employ smokers.

He told BBC Points West: "We don't want people coming into work smelling of smoke.

"We want healthy employees and we believe a non-smoker is going to be healthier than a smoker."

Another spokesman reportedly told The Mirror: "Legally, we're entitled to do this. It's positive discrimination and we're proud of it."

Simon Clark, of pro-smoking lobby group Forest, said: "What's going to happen next? Are firms going to refuse to employ fat people?

"It is straight-forward discrimination, but it appears smokers are the one minority group with no rights whatsoever."

Smoker or non smoker, I fail to see how anyone cannot be appalled by this.

Sounds good to me, if we can only extend it to fat b@stards and ugly birds the workplace would be much improved.

I heard this on Radio lentil (5) this morning and some cretin texted in to say how fantastic it was that non-smoker's rights were being put first. Now, how can it possibly affect the non-smokers if there is no smoking allowed in the office?

If this is OK then am I allowed to get rid of everyone over 45 or lards, because they are more likely to become ill or take time off. Bloody ridiculous.

Having heard her on telly this morning I think the company did the right thing though argueably for the wrong reasons.

When talking about the health issue of smoking she said she wouldn't have taken time off for illness caused by smoking (though she didn't say how she knew) but was more likely to take time off due to a hangover.

Silly buggers! That'll render a good percentage of the population completely unemployable then. The government will have to introduce "unemployability benefits" for smokers so they can buy their tabs!

Good thought, need to include things like acne, bald men hmm and women, any girls over size 12, men with higher percentage body fat than 20%. facial hair of any kind, no people with more hair on their backs than their heads. anyone with halitosis, no coffee addicts, no sugar freaks, anyone who thinks a fried breakfast is a good idea. people smelling of diesel, people who drive cars, people who smell of sweat.

screw the fact of wether they can do the job or not, will all be crap in the work place but will look damn fine while doing it.

Same thing has allegadly happened here where I work, apprentices taken on, asked if they smoked and then those that did were no longer in the running for the job.

I think it's downright disgusting.

Fair enough the company want a no smoking policy, do the honourable thing and tell the employee first! Then that employee can decide if they want to give up smoking and get the job or tell the dicriminating fecks to stick their job up their arse.

I for one will no longer have a problem calling fat people fat and making a point of just how unhealthy they are.

I can see the point of this. If their clients are against smoking and the workers of this company come to meetings sticking of cigarette smoke, I can see how it would present the wrong image. Smoking outside is unacceptable to me too.

And we'll laugh back when some local builder fancies the look of 95% of your land and charges you to build on it

So they don't employ unhealthy people. Well, they are in the States, so the chances are that the majority of their employees are obese, so why do they employ them?

Here you go...

www.dataflow.net/contact.asp

I thought of sending them an email thus:

I am interested in your applications, but am a smoker. Do you want my money?

When I apllied for my current job my boss got me to fill in another application form for the job as he said I was perfect for the job but they wouldn't take me on if I said I smoked.

No smoking on company property allowed-fair enough, but nobody has the right to tell me what I can and can't do in my time. Still, at least there are plenty of unemployable chav scumbags to fill all the skilled positions

Cos obesity is someone elses fault isn't it? It's either genetic or the fault of McDonalds. Whereas evil smokers deserve all they get don't they? Just like motorists, an enormous cash cow to be milked/taken the piss out of at will.

In the future if someone asks a smoker if they smoke they will just lie. If they dont smoke in the office how will they find out.

Its like asking if someone drinks, as long as they dont do it in the office whats the problem
