At dinner last night as friend of mine who works in the public sector told me about her last day before finishing for Christmas:

They had decided that they would order Pizza in for lunch rather than go out as they wanted to eat togeher but had to staff the office. They had been given gifts (biscuits, bottles of wine) by grateful companies with whom they work closely, but decided that they only needed one box of biscuits and gave the rest to the homeless shelter.

Someone brought in a CD player and they had a ferw carols in the background and after lunch intended to have a glass of wine while working. They agreed that some would not drink so that if they had to deal with a member of the public at the counter or an emergency job came in no hint of alcohol would be evident.

So far, sounds to me like responsible people?

The 'organisation' in the form of a manager in an adjacent unit insisted on the following:

The guy who went to get the Pizza had to take 15 minutes of his card for being 'unavailable' for work.

The manager pointed out that they should not eat hot food at their desk for health and safety reasons. They had to eat it in groups rather than one group, and away from their desks.

The manager, who had heard about the gifts tried to get them to share their biscuits with his unit, who had received fewer gifts but they had already given it to the homeless.

They had to take their decorations down because it may activate the alarm over the holidays and they had no budget for a call out (although the decorations had been up since early december without problems).

The wine was a complete 'No' until they were finished work and were off the premises.

The CD had to go off in case it offended non Christans calling in.

Oh, and by the way can you submit a report about the biscuits going to the homeless because we can use that in our Charter mark accreditation?

All of this was communicated by email.

I wonder why the public sector is criticised for staff not being committed to their jobs?

Both me and the missus work in the public sector and neither of us have come across the like of this. Which part of the public sector does this planet zog form part of?
