Au contraire -
I hate the compensation culture and I have given the companies at least 3 chances to solve the problem. The monies have always been offered and never demanded and have always been followed up by an apology by the company in question.
One of those was because they simply did not send me a paper bill for three months. It took me a total of 1 hour on the phone to an 0870 number, an hours chasing up, never being called back and in the end I finally had to take court action (I need those bills to claim back my business calls).
I am a buisnessman, I expect the same level of customer service that I give my clients and I expect the situation to be resolved in a timely fashion. This is not about them making the slighest mistake - mistakes are allowed as we are all only human. This is about gross incompetance and not following up a legitimate complaint, which limited companies are legally obliged to do.
Now my next lecture is about people jumping to conclusions...

Quite random, but why is that so?
Forgotten exactly which act it is in, think it might be the companies act, but if you write a letter of complaint to the company then they legally obliged to reply within 28 days (not resolve the complaint but at least acknowledge reciept of said complaint and lay out action of what they intend). CPW did NOT reply to any letters for a month or so each time so I merely pulled them up on it. I am very patient but at the same time when I am left with a non-working phone that I rely on and I am paying a contract for - I can get a bit s**tty!

A few of my selection: -
Waitrose £50 vouchers to my wife after she fell into a shopping trolley as when the store was refurbished they created a step across the car park entrance so the trolley stopped and she didn't. In my letter to them I did state that as a spectrator I find it ramarkably funny as she vanished into the trolley! However at the same time it did hurt and we didn;t want it happening tio any one else.
Waitrose £39 worth of sirloin free when it was the only joint in the store one Sunday. No chicken, pork lamb or other beef. Bunged it in the freezer fir Christmas and went to Safeway to get a joint for that day!
John Lewis: £75 worth of vouchers after they fouled up our wedding presents. Took 6 months to deliver them as they wanted to ensure they were perfect, and when we opened them 50% of the china was flawed!
PC World - Office Professional for £75 after they sold me a new monitor which was in fact second hand.
Talk Talk: £15 credit after BT terminated our service with Talk Talk!
BT: £10 for the same event - something wrong there as it was BT at fault!
Subaru: Refund of 2 months contract hire (£360 a month) whilst the car was off the road having an engine rebuild. They also supplied a courtesy car for the entire period! Mind you the dealer was incompetent.
Early Learning Centre - All of daughters presents free of charge last year. Mind you they didn't mean that to happen was just caused by their inefficency, and them refunding the cost by mistake!

Same here, although it wasn't strictly their fault that Royal Doulton couldn't manage to manufacture anything for the whole summer, they did increase the size of our dinner service from 6 of everything to 8 of everything which was handy.

Do you think that was fair of you ?
If their "inefficiency" had caused them to charge you twice instead, would you have said nothing ?
A couple of years ago had my eyes treated by Laser at Boots.
They messed up one eye (not that badly, still loads better than it was) by not realising I had an astigmatism. The other eye has 20/20 vision now, which is a result when I couldn't count my toes in the shower. And thats not because I am 23' tall!
Got £2500 back from them thank you very much.
Also had a new type R which despite 12 trips to the dealers, two weeks at the Honda factory still pulled to either the left or right randomly as it had done from day one. After 8000 miles they gave me a new one plus £2500.
The second one leaked into the drivers footwell from new. They couldn't fix that, despite a new windscree being fitted. I refused to let them take the wings, sideskirts and front bumper off a 50 mile old a car so they delivered a third one. I refused that as the engine bay had a LOT of grey primer overspray as did the scuttle panel below the windscreen. It also had swirl marks all over the front end and rear bumper.
I got a 4th one which has been fine and dandy for 15000 miles. Oh, its on an 05 plate rather than an 04 so thats taken a years depreciation out thank you very much.

HWMBO had a Renault Scenic when they first came out. It broke down @ 6wks, fuel pump failed and damaged the tank too. It was off the road for 6wks waiting for parts. £300 to spend at Renault
then when it was back the starter failed and then the auto gearbox went AWOL. After a visit to the then Renault HQ in Swindon, they replaced it with a new car which was upgraded for free with ABS, metallic paint and electric sunroofs!
I had £150 from Vauxhall when my brand new Vectra didnt manage to get me home from the dealer after collecting it. Again something to do with the auto gearbox.

We went on a family holiday a couple of years ago, and the holiday company cocked up on the accomodation. However, we were upgraded to a better (5 star) hotel. I thought no more of it, but when I got home the holiday company sent me a credit for £4000 off my next holiday! How good is that?

Well the story is more complex.
Presents were ordered online well in advance of Christmas. They hadn't been received within the delivery time suggested so we phoned, in a queue for ages, eventually speak to someone who said they will be with you within 5 days. So we wait still no pressies, call again, are told they are on route, and should be there tomorrow. They weren;t, call again and they say we wilol re-issue them. By now its 21st December and they promise to deliver them before Xmas. On 24th December just after lunch a very harrassed DHL driver arrives, with pressies, and a vanful of other deliveries for ELC.
We don;t think more about it, until 5th January when a duplicate delivery from ELC arrives. We call them, held in a queue and they finally answer and say DHL will collect them on 15th Jan. Wife waits in all day for DHL who donlt arrive. She calls DHL who say they were never told by ELC to collect them, but they will collect them and arrive at a pre-arranged time the next day.
In Feb I get a letter from ELC asking for payment, so I ring up saying I have already paid and had my goods so I donlt owe you anything. They say that when we got the returned delivery it was the original order (delivered a month late!) so we refunded your purchase price, we now want paying for the second lot.
I therefore write to them saying that I am perfectly happy to pay for the second lot when they provide documentary evidence of the refund, pay me compensation for my phone calls to them, and for the hassle of worrying about whether daughters pressies would arrive. Oddly my bill was slightly higher than theirs. Never heard a thing from them!
not quite a complaints work type of thing, but being cheeky and complaing works....
my local motor club where i grew up used to hold an auto test every new years day, two brothers hired a brand new fiesta (it was the brand new shape out in 1989), and took it to the auto test where they very vigorously drove it round, until one of the radiator hoses hit the altarnator, and split in a cloud of steam!
after it cooled a bit, they drove it up the road, and got the RAC to take them home.
once the garage was open where they hired it from, they made up a sob story about being let down, and got their money back, and a free car hire next time they wanted it!
