Anyone Know Anything About Fridge/Freezers?
Discussion
...'cause the other day the fridge part of our fridge freezer stopped being cold
The Light still comes on, the freezer is still very much frozen but the fridge is an indicated 22 degrees
Anyone know if this sounds like something that can be fixed or if it's time to check out the sales?
Thanks

it's got a digital read out for the temps of the compartments so I guess it can't be too old
Translation: it's needlessly complex and as a result likely to be awkward to fix...
Does the thermostat have a big knob (fnarr fnarr) and adjusting it over its full travel result in a click at some point from within the works? If so it's probably a standard capillary thermostat and the fancy rubbish is limited to digital readouts, and the problem is most likely the thermostat itself. They're quite remarkably universal in the fitting and only cost about 15 quid. So you're in luck and there's no need to waste resources on a whole new fridge when only one small part has gone wrong.
If however the thermostat apparatus is all electronic it's less easy to pinpoint the failure over the internet, and while in theory it should be even easier to fix, the way they do these things probably means it's actually harder and more expensive...
ETA: Is it "frost free"? Could simply be the air circulation over the cooling element has been choked off by ice buildup... might be worth switching it off for a few hours to let the ice melt.

No it's all digital, no big knobs
Buttons to adjust the fridge or freezer temp depending on which compartment is selected. Also it is frost free but the freezer bit is fine and with no ice. might be an idea to stop it and then start it again after an hour or so, I was just worried the freezer might pack up also if I did that
Thanks forthe replys!

Mine did exactly this last week... sudden warm beer panic warranted further investigation. Transpired that the plastic mountings of the fan assembly at the back of the fridge which blow all that nice cool air all over the place had sheared, which meant the fan had jammed in the fan aperture. A quick trip to the bosch webite and 4gbp later i'd ordered a new placcy bracket, which arrived within 24 hours. Bloody marvellous, especially seeing as the fan assembly itself would have cost over 70gbp. Isnt it nice when things work out well for a change? Hope your problem is something this simple, rgds

Get a new one, they're so cheap, repairing not worth the hassle.
Agree with BG. If it has older style refrigerant no right minded engineer would even look at it. They are extremely cheap anyway - see www.empiredirect.co.uk for examples.

Listen all you jokers telling him to get a new one, not fixing things is what is wrong with this blinding throwaway world.
Like the rechargeable devices which were fine when you had to insert a power lead into them with the other end in the wall socket, now after a few years the thing works fine for 30 seconds and is utterly useless after two minutes operation, battery pack cannot be opened without destroying it, cost of a new battery pack is a tenner short of the national debt of Former Yugosalvian Republic of Macedonia, so you buy a new whatever for £59.99, only to find when you "open up" the old battery pack that what is inside you could have got down Maplins for £4.99, AND WHY IS NOTHING SOLD IN ROUND SQUIDS ANYMORE!!!!!
...... and breathe.

FiF - couldn't agree more!
While they do sometimes fail due to loss of refrigerant, it is not very common. Failure of something external to the refrigerant circuit, like the thermostat, or the air circulation of a frost-free one, or even the thermal cutout on the compressor tripping because someone switched it off and on again in too rapid succession, is much more likely, in which case the refrigerant doesn't come into it.
Wouldn't have expected that to happen. Did you try it? Did it work?

Gotta agree with FiF - beyond that, for me anyway fixing things is a way of life, I pride myself on fixing things other people wouldn't have a clue how to work on.
If the freezer is working but the fridge compartment isn't, probably the main freon circuit, which is the main costly part of the appliance, is fine. Very likely it's a blower issue. Most frost-free units have a blower for each compartment or else a single blower with a flap you adjust like my old Sanyo.
The brand has not been mentioned yet, if you Google the brand name you will likely find shops that have parts. At least local to me, there are quite a few appliance repair shops who will gladly give technical advice to go with the parts.
Very likely it's not worth having a repair man come round though, since they charge for the trip even if they can't fix, usually don't show up on time, and cost too damn much, not to mention frequently make a mess of some sort that you have to clean up...
Since the fan might well be jammed I would not let this go for a long time.
Shutting it off for an hour and then re-starting sounds like a good idea to me! That and running the control for the fridge to full cold, that might jar something loose.
Do post back as to how it came out.

The same fault happened to my dads. Freezer was working fine, but the fridge stopped
Being a helpful and practical son, I went and had a look to see if I could fix it. What he had neglected to tell me was that he put a knife through it and punctured the coolant pipes in an attempt to defrost it. Bless him, he's not as sharp as when he was younger.
You haven't accidentally stabbed it have you?
