After the fantastic help previously I'm after more information from the enlightened souls on PH!

Right.....so I've got the camcorder, I've made the vidoes - now what do I do with them? Happy Snapper has a web site that he uses for pictures but we don't think that he can put videos on it - it might be that this is an option that we can add and he's trying to find out at the moment.

But generally I'm incredibly confused about what file formats to use - the software seems to produce a number of different formats, .avi . asf and some others but these files seem huge. Is that just how it is and we need to find a video streaming package and stick them on the web site. What about bandwidth - how does that affect the web site?

We've found a link to some software that converts .avi files to flash files and this seems to allow you to put the flash file on the website so that viewers view it from there rather than downloading it? Is this any good? www.easywebvideo.com/

Otherwise we've found this https://www.streamload.com/About/videohosting.asp?CMP=KNC - is it likely to be any good - is there anything similar out there?

I don't want to spent vast amounts of money on buying storage space but I've also got some friends and family who are still on dial up and ISDN - then downloading videos is potentially a problem.

Cheers

Wow...

What an open ended question...

For some very good newbie Q&A try here:
www.videohelp.com

Short answers - I will elaborate if I can get some more time

1. Your best bet is to capture your video in DV-AVI (firewire) for editing.

2. To share your video online, you may want to check out Microsoft's free media encoder to re-encode your video to WMV after editing.

3. Video is extremely consumption oriented media (in terms of storage, computing resources and bandwidth). I am afraid that there is no "workaround" that doesn't degrade quality (I mean you CAN share your video at 10fps and/or 60kbps - but who would want to watch it?)

4. Lastly - you may want to post your questions on the PH Video and Photo forum. There are a lot of smart people there...

Thanks Ernest - sometimes the beauty of ignorance is that you don't realise how big the questions are!!

I'll have a look at the link you've posted.

Piglet,
If you're going to put your vids up on the net, make sure they are .wmv format. It's the only one I've not had problems with, and if you get the option you can encode in different sizes and bitrates.
Adobe's media encoder (part of premiere) does the job very nicely for me.
