I have got a cat. great little thing. Don't be fooled by them. They are incredibly interactive, and are just as affectionate as dogs, they just like to go off and do their own thing. Mine usually comes in from his little meanders about the woods, and plonks his arse on my lap, and proceeds to purrr away until he goes to sleep. really cute! I used to be a dog person,. but was transformed when i got 2 kittens. They were just so fascinating to watch. been a cat person ever since. (The 2 kittens both died of aneamia. Genetic apparently ). had Monster for almost 2 years now, and he's never scratched the furniture, shed any logs in the house, except for litter tray. Gaz, maybe you should have a try at cats, as well as a dog. It would solve any cat problems you had, and you may well get to like them. It's like watching a program on tigers, or jaguars, (see, car related), when they are stalking around in the undergrowth!...

I don't think they have warmed to us either, as they keep hiding under the sofa.

Maybe they have read your posts RE: cats on here? (cats are always shy at forst. no often will they be affectionate, or unscared in a new place)

Oh... That makes me a raving poofter?
maybe it is the dog owners who say these things who are a little ill at ease about which way they swing, and as such get a big, meandog to convey a manly exterior??

does that mean cat owners are independant and not like sheep?, does it mean they are individualls and dont need to feel part of a pack (ie think for themselves?) in wich case I know what I am as I go my own way!

just to add I love ALL animals equally

I love big cat diary!

I don't have any cat-shit related problems now mate as they are scared to come into the garden because of the dog- doesn't stop them from walking/sleeping on the cars though.

If I got a cat, it'd have to be a kitten as a cat would take one look at the dog and think "I'm toast", even if the dog only wanted to lick it to death! I don't think kittens come with fear- isn't it something they pick up on the way, like puppies do?

Think you are right there. Dogs tend to be more curious with kittens, as they are so small. tend to sniff a lot, and wag tail. Go on gaz, you know you want to!

I wouldn't listen to SJP... It seems to me he has other things on his mind, rather than pets.

It's the usual crud spouted by people far too concerned by what others think!

I have a pair of both the blighters .
The dogs as pack animals look up to you for guidance, the cats as cats look down on you and wonder when you're gonna feed them. They also look down on the dogs with a certain distain and begrudging acceptance too.
I agreee with teh earlier comment, unless you introduce a kitten to a dog it will never in my experience accept a dog is not going to chase it, so will run for the high ground, which may be your leg/body or the curtains .
Of the two, cats are generally the brighter animal.

All cats are ruthlessly efficient killings machines. They don't socialise well because they don't need to. Kill a bit, then sleep off the meat. Only difference with the domestic cat is that they've learned a bit of interaction in order to get the can opened. They're great simple pets - you feed them, then they do whatever the fk they like.

Dogs are much more intelligent. You really have a 2-way relationship with them (careful vixpy). This also means they require a lot more effort to look after.

They each have their faults but I like 'em both.

I'm also allergic to them both.

I'm not one to spread rotten gossip, but how he starts about shirtliftery, and so forth in a thread about pets says something more about him than what animal he has!

Shirtliftery... One of the Julian Clarey school of manliness...
