THE QUEEN BY ROLF
Discussion
Anyone see it?
I thought it was a good and have been looking forward to it since seeing it on the adverts. Rolf is a much better artist than I thought, and it was nice to see the queen talking normaily ( well for her).
Had the argument with the wife about the monarchy
but good to see something different on TV

I watched it.
I have seen previous programmes where he replicates paintings in the style of others - Vandermeer and Monet were both good.
He is a very talented painter, far better than you think if you remember his "emulsion brush" paintings from years ago. It was good to seem him paint in his own style, and his picture was absolutely superb when he unveiled it.
Rolf is an entertainment god!

I watched it and was curious as to what the Queen would be like infront of a live camera. After a few minutes they seemed to get on ok and I rather thought she was a very humble person - not at all like I thought she would be. Fair play ma'am.
Rolfs' first few brush strokes had me somewhat bermused as I thought he was having a laugh when he attacked the canvas like a lunatic with paint going everyhwere. Half an hour on and it was starting to look the very masterpiece he had been hoping for.
A very interestng program and two very special individuals.

And wasn't he (justifiably) proud when he did so?
Considering he would have been under time constraints both from HRH and the Beeb, I thought he did a magnificent job.
I didn't see the prog, but I think it may have been a little misleading. Rolf H. did this painting over a period of two months, quite normal for an oil. With two sittings and probably a couple of ref photos. (the ref photos are just a guess by me)
It didn't receive rave reveiws from everybody, it was compared to earlier paintings by Freud and Dargie. I personally liked it. It made her look more human.

You're quite right - he did the painting over quite a time, though originally the two sittings were scheduled to be seperated by 'only' ten days, but the second sitting was rescheduled and delayed 'cos HRH had a cold.
He also took some digi pics with a camera held together with sticking plaster as he had dropped it down the stairs!

Thought it was brilliant TV - Rolf and HRH The Queen came across brilliantly.
Really enjoyed watching the programme - thought that the painting was much better having watched it. Originally I thought it was a bit crap - but now i know the amount of time, effort and skill Rolf used I see it in a whole new light.
STill don't like the Queen's teeth on the picture though.

If you like his artwork then I absolutely recommend you visit Graham or Leo at :-

I'm somewhat bias as we have a signed limited Giclée of this hanging in our dining room :-
Which I purchased from Graham on impluse when collecting a signed limited Giclée of the following with my Dad :-
But I believe the painting to have fetched the highest price at auction (but quite a few have never got that far) so far is :-
Great bloke and a superb fine artist.

How much does his stuff go for?
gasblaster said:For a signed limited Giclée anywhere between £250 -> £3500, but for the top two about around £1200 framed etc - depends as to if all the stock has been sold to the dealers, if it has then expect to pay more as the 'market' starts trading. For originals think 10s of thousands.
