If you want some proper fun in IG1/2 get a Fiat Cinquecento/Seicento Sporting. Cheapest insurance out there with Italian flair thrown in too.

Are you being left in charge of servicing costs? Biggest discovery I made with my first car was the cost of new tyres, annual service, etc always left me feeling a little hurt in the pocket, so get something that is realiable and cheap to service.

And for that matter, the Cinquecento Sporting has loads of street cred - Michael Schumacher's got one FFS! Think cool Italian urbanites parking haphazardly in piazzas outside coffee bars and hammering the horn and gesticulating in traffic jams. Plus, it'll be the only remotely 'sporting' car among your driving peers (except for the inevitable rich git with daddy's 3-series).

And has the added bonus of being very cheap to modify, as when the parts break (which they will) it's cheaper to buy the sports parts than Fiat ones (well, it was anyway).

Have a look at the insurance for one of these, it's what pwig started out on (aswel as many other people i know) and they're great cars. The SEI is very nice, my friend had one and the interior/power is massively better than anything else you'll find for that kind of budget/insurance. Look alright too. Only thing to watch out for is headgaskets - although pwig's was always fine and he swears if you keep an eye on oil/water the HG issue is rather unfounded.

Pistonheads - for when searching AutoTrader seems too much like hard work.
