A bit of an old chestnut.....

You find yourself in the strange country of everywhere and have lost your way. You are either in the town of Here or There. All the inhabitants of Here tell the truth and those of There always lie. You see a local in the street and you don't know which town he's from.

What one question could you ask him to find out where you are?

YOu ask him which town they'd tell you you were in the other town - and the answers the opposite.

Where's my medal

Ok so if you were in Here and asked your question to the inhabitant of Here he would say There, if you asked the inhabitant of There he would say Here....2 different answers if you take the opposite of what they say. No Medal

You can ask any question to which you know the answer and the stranger should All you are trying to do is establish whether he's a liar or not!

Is the sky blue? What is 3 plus 4? Is Kennedy an alcoholic?

You ask him "Am I standing here?"

If he says yes, then you are in 'Here' because he is telling the truth. If he says 'no you are not' which he would have to if he was from 'There' you know he's lying in which case you are in 'There'

You could be 'standing here' in There, it may tell you whether he is truthful or not but not the town.

The question would be:-
"Which townfolk tell the truth, The people of "Here" or "There"?

If he answers the people of "here" then he is telling the truth and you are in the town of "Here"

If he answers "There" then he is a liar and you are in the town of "There"

I think thats correct, seems to work out?

Edited to add the missing T.... DOH (But you know what I meant)

So how does that work if the person you ask happens to be just visiting the other town for the day?

If you are asking someone from There (a liar) he will say Here, therefore the above doesn't work

this one's right, just confusingly written

you are in one town, you say "If i asked someone from the other town 'where am I now?', what would they say?"
the people from Here would tell you what someone from There would say, which would be a lie
the people from There would tell you a lie, they'd tell you what the people from Here would NOT say
whatever answer you get is a lie, you then know the opposite is true

So:

the people from "Here" are us

and

the people from "There" are all politicians

Now it all becomes clear!
