Bought a cheap copy of MS Flight Simulator on Ebay. They should put a health warning on the box. Completely addictive.

I will be old and grey before I put it, or the first plane down.

Why didn't I find this before women???

Lol, I'll sell you an even more challenging game - a gliding flight simulator. No engines to help you, just use the thermals

I used to play 'Elite' on the BBC PC back in the 80's - totally addictive.

Is there a (free) version for the PC.??

I worked out the other day I have over £400 worth of add ons for MS Flight Sim. All the photographic scenery, 737NG, Concorde, FS Traffic and loads more.

I wouldnt mind but I only got the bloody thing to help me pass my IR.

It depends on your definition of free...

Elite is the best game ever.

I am an unashamed Mac snob these days so if you've got a PC this won't help you... but a rather talented individual has written an absolutely excellent version of Elite for Mac OS X (I think someone has ported it to Linux as well so the PC crew aren't totally out in the cold)

Check out http://oolite.aegidian.org/ - it is fantastic...

Ah, Elite.

Originally on the BBC, closely followed by the Electron.

Firebird did a conversion for the other inferior 8-bits () - the C64, Spectrum, and CPC - not as good, much more arcade-y.

Later, 16 bit versions appeared (ST, Amiga, and a PC version). PC version was fairly crap IIRC (EGA graphics, maybe only CGA )

Then the definitive version in the early 90s - Elite on the Archimedes. Fantastic. Many a day wasted on this!

Frontier came out later on the PC, but it was so buggy as to be unplayable. Followed up with Frontier First Encounters which was supposedly better and you can download it but I have never really bothered with it.

Spent time playing it on the Beeb & Electron when I was at junior school but never got much further than shooting at space stations and then trying to zap the police vipers. Speccy version a couple of years later was fairly crap (and only worked 1 time in 10 due to crappy lenslok protection!!). ST version was quite pretty but bloody easy.

Arch version was amazing. Spent weeks on it, had an absolutely loaded ship and shedloads of money. Think I became "Dangerous" or "Deadly" until I discovered that I would be playing for months and months until I finally became Elite.

Think I discovered girls sometime around then....

Oh yes, love it. Just wait till you install the Photo Scenery add-ons...

Try to land a Learjet on an aircraft carrier (there is one) or a 747 at London City

Edit: or Concorde under Tower Bridge - Learjet UNDER the road deck is also possible!

If you value your mental health, keep away from FFE. It was released too early, unplayably buggy, and resulted in the demise of Gametek (publisher) and Braben got a load of aggro too.

However with the latest patches.... and it does take a bit of hacking to work properly on modern 32-bit windows platforms (google for JJFFE - a guy called John Jordan (?) disassembled and recompiled to work with DirectX) - but it is still an incredible game now.

If Braben had done the job properly (or been able to tell the publishers to piss off until he was happy, I'm not sure who the demons were in this case) - it would have been the best game ever IMO.

If you've got time, give the latest shareware patched version a try. It's orders of magnitude more immersive than Frontier and some of the scripted missions are pure genius.

There's lots of old PC games on here. Trying to get them to work on an XP box is another matter though. Good luck

Have I read the manual right, because I do find it counter-intuitive to use the throttle to climb and dive, and the pitch to control the speed. I guess I have spent too much time in a car. This flying lark is harder than you think, not to mention the fact there seemed to be 2000ft tall trees in the alps that I kept hitting.

Single player would prbably be X-Beyond the Frontier (or X2, whatever the newest one is called).

Chopper is hard unless you have a twist-grip joystick or pedals to use for the rudder.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Honest.

Now if you'll excuse me, it's computers and machinery from Leesti to Diso, and then on to Zaonce and Tionisla.

I definitely didn't buy this game in 1984 on tape for the Beeb. And then again on disc for the Beeb. And then again on disc for the Arc. Oh no. I also definitely didn't become Elite many times over, either. And you wouldn't catch me dead with that Elite Plus add-on.
