it does seem a bit odd, the usual normal level of contents cover is 25-40k.
which company is it?
RHG (Richard House Group) It's the "General Contents Check Sheet" I'm looking at.
They do say our minimum cover should be £50,000. Not quite sure how the £147,000 comes into it though??

not heard of them to be honest but they sound like a broker.
I can't see why they would suggest contents worth 147k and a cover level of 50k - what would happen if the whole lot went up in flames? very strange

most people do underestimate how much it would cost to replace everything due to a total loss. Things like curtains, carpets, furniture, CDs, clothing etc do add up quite scaringly quickly. However, best bet is, if you feel you don't need massive cover, go for More Than or one of the other firms who give a generous 'minimum' cover (think it's £60k) but at a reasonable premium. As with everything else in life, it's a risk issue. You might decide not to insure something if the premium is more than you want to pay compared with the risk of losing the item through damage or theft etc
