Holland launches Fun Burials

A Dutch entrepreneur is offering what he hopes will be the latest extreme sport - 'fun burials'.

For 75 euros, people can be buried 5ft down in a coffin for an hour - under a 3.5 tonne concrete block, reports Nu.nl.

The coffin has an oxygen supply, a panic button and is linked by webcam to a computer which friends and family can watch.

Dutch entertainer Eddy Daams, from Eexterveenschekanaal, is behind the idea which he calls Fun Burials.

He said: "After bunjee jumping, this wil become the new extreme kick. It is very safe, nothing can go wrong.

"If the person in the coffin is having a panic attack, he can push the panic button to heave off the block."

Mr Daams is running the project in his own garden and says it should be up and running commercially this summer.

I genuinely hope they have accounted for the weight of the block.

Unlike the chap who buried himself in a perspex coffin under wet concrete.

Of course the perspex promptly collapsed on the upside though, he did save on a funeral...

I doubt a 3.5t block can be removed quickly when you press the panic button.

In that Hollywood Myths Exploded programme, they took a metal coffin and buried it under a load of dry soil in a controlled perspex-sided burial site. The lid of the coffin began to buckle very quickly and well before the "plot" had been filled and they had to let the perspex sides drop sharpish to relieve the weight of the dry soil and stop the coffin collapsing. The stunt guy seemed quite rattled by it. If the 3.5 tonne of concrete remains suspended above the "coffin" then maybe it would be OK but I can't help feeling it has "Error causes crushed coffin" headlines written all over it.

Motorcycle hearse - brilliant!! Just hope the sidecar is secured properly to the bike, just in case of sudden braking, and an unfortunate Frank Spencer-type moment!!

What has always preterbed me though, is that funeral is an anagram of 'real fun'

For who I wonder? Not the guest of honour, that's for sure...

Just what is the point of this? There is an adrenaline rush with bungee jumping, but being 'buried' under a block that can be raised just by pressing a panic button is hardly going to get the juices flowing, surely?

It's the Dutch. If there's an extreme to anything, they'll find it...

The hand coming out of the grave and the stiff coming back to life after being buried.

I think the real Dutch thing is you can smoke your drugs in peace.
