Right before you lot take the proverbial p*ss I'm not a 15 year old school kid asking for help with my GCEs. I've just signed myself up for some professional exams.....

... they are the astonishingly exciting Corporate Treasury Exams. Oh god it's going to be dull ( but add a gilt edge to my CV ) the problem is I will have to give up at least 20hrs a week to evening/weekend study....and I just can't see how I'm going to motivate myself to do this.

So having extracted a grand out of my employer to do these exams, any suggestions in terms of motivating myself to knuckle down, study and pass???

ps, any 15 year old PHers, no offence meant, and you suggestions would be equally welcome of course

promise yourself a reward. its the only way. something you really cant live without. unless its dialysis, in which case you should probably go ahead and have that irrespective of corporate qualifications.

Plan an opulent future that success in these exams will fund. Money not only buys you everything you want in life but gives you self-respect and also makes you far more attractive to women you never thought you had any chance of pulling. Trampy little gold-diggers in some cases but not all. LOL. Now knuckle down Jones and stop copying. You boy, quiet at the back.

Money doesn't buy happiness but it sure helps. No, I tell a lie, it does buy happiness.

Work out a timetable and try and do most of it at the weekend when you are fresh.

If you set yourself a deadline of say 9am on a Saturday and Sunday morning to start studying then you should be able to get most of it done in the weekend mornings.

that's what I did with my CIMA, but then I was somewhat more motivated. I like the idea of rewarding myself with a prize, what I might do is 'pay' myself say £20 per hour that I study so that every hour that gets added to a fund from which I buy myself whatever I want when I pass?

Set up a routine and timetable it.
Set yourself targets for what you want to do in each session, no more no less. Build in break times.
Allot yourself time off, fri night, and do no work at all.
Dont work late in to the night.
Start early on weekends and work until midday.

1) Add an entry in the third column here.
2) Find a good picture online and put a copy of it next to / on / in anything you think might cause distraction from your studies.

Unless, like a Prossie, you are giving happiness to other people

If the girlfriend/wife is a distraction I'd suggest you avoid putting the aforementioned picture in it as that in itself could be considered a distraction (and not altogether very hygenic).

Now that's an idea I like. Though I'm not sure my garage is wide enough to accomodate the beast I have in mind.

Disconnect the internet for a start, turn your phone off and work for 20 mins then a 5 minute break, keeps your concentration going, eat porridge before you start working and do the reward thing it works.

It works too. Used it on a friend of mine who needed to get in shape for his Fire Brigade entry tests. He used to sit in front of the TV from the moment he got in until he went to bed. I stuck a picture of a fireman next to his TV and it took him out of autopilot and shamed him into doing something towards the goal.

This one is even better as it's more of a carrot than a stick. It's just a great way of reminding yourself why you're doing the exams. If a bigger paycheck isn't the real reason (but let's face it...) then work out what is and then replace the fantasy car picture with that.
