I decided to have a few weeks with no alcohol whatsoever on the basis that it would probably do me some good after the excesses of the festive season. I'm not a heavy drinker but I usually have a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of pints or a gin and tonic or two in the evenings.

I started on Monday and have subsequently found it difficult to sleep at night. Are the two things connected?

Has anybody else experienced this?

Have any PHers ever gone 24 hours without booze?

I haven't had a day without beer for a very long time (years)

I just like the taste of beer more than soft drinks or coffee etc..

suppose I ought to try one day though

I haven't had a drink at all for a week and find that I sleep better although it seems to take a while longer to drop off.

Don't get the wrong idea, I don't usually drink myself to unconsciousness each night - normally a bottle of beer or a glas of wine.

It sure is easier to sleep once you've been on the sauce. I used to drink every day but now only do so about once a week.

I quite often wake up a few times in the night now. I can't ever remember this happening after a session but whether that's because I was too drunk to remember, I don't know?

Thats your prostate Dick. More to do with your age than the booze.

I sometimes worry about having a coupla vodkas or beers of an evening but feel better when you lot admit to it too. Besides, it makes TV more bearable

I'm the opposite - sleep better if I don't have a drink. Weird

I haven't had a drink since New Year and have the same problem, get to about 11pm and wake up! Worked out that this is already the longest I've gone without a drink for 20 years and am tring to get to the end of the month!

What is this an AA meeting? I have maybe 1 or 2 glasses of wine a week and maybe a couple of beers or spirits on the weekend.

I know I'd get addicted if I had it everynight, I had a similar problem with coffee, I was having more than 5 per day (yeah not much compared to some) and it was affecting my sleep, I never have more than one a day now, if at all.

Like you, since Christmas I've stopped all alcahol consumption in the evenings - it was two or three glasses of wine.

For the first few nights I had trouble sleeping. However, since then I've been sleeping better. As such, my advice is 'persevere'!

I sometimes go months without a drink.

Whenever my wife and I go out I'm usually the one driving and I hardly drink at all at home.

I had a big P*ssup New Year’s Eve though (much to my wife's disapproval)

Exactly the same here, been off the sauce completely since New Year's Day and for the first week, I couldn't get to sleep for an hour or two each night, but gradually the period between going to bed and dropping off has come down to the usual head-pillow-unconsciousness it's always been before.

I found at first that reading helped, I seemed to naturally feel sleepy after 20 minutes reading and found it easier to drop off.
