Fawlty England fans risk jail

England football fans could be jailed if they do the Basil Fawlty goosestep during the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Using Nazi symbols or actions is illegal in Germany and authorities say the same tough penalties given to right wing extremists will apply to fans who copy the salutes - even if done in jest.

Christian Sachs, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said: "It doesn't matter if someone is doing the goosestep, raising their arm in the Hitler greeting or handing out swastikas, these are all crimes in Germany and can be punished with up to three years in jail."

Mr Sachs added: "If the judge in a case decided the offender had encouraged others to violence, the sentence could even be as much as five years. The perpetrator's country of origin is also irrelevant."

I didn't know this.
The Swastika was stolen by those bleeding Fricken Nazis, from India. In India it even has a similar name (Shastika) and means peace and welcome and can often be seen on houses and on door mats all over India.
I wonder what an Indians persons rights would be in Germany who chose to have the symbol of peace in his home in Germany.....

Tha's not wrong there MR. Several languages have a similar word for welcome or such like, take the Thai greeting Sawasdee Kha from a lady, for example. What a way to turn a good word bad

"Swastika, Named from the Sanskrit "so be it," or "amen," the swastika has been a religious emblem of worldwide occurrence since at least 10,000 B.C. It appeared on the oldest coinage in India, on images of Buddha in Japan, and on Greek and Roman figures of the Great Goddess. On artifacts dating from the thirteenth century B.C. onward, the swastika has been found in Asia Minor, Greece, China, Persia, Lybia, Scandinavia, Britain, and Iceland. It was adopted by Hitler's Third Reich on the supposition that it was a "pure Aryan" sign. This was not true..." (taken from theosophy website)

Annoys me that a good historic symbol is now associated with facism, racism and anti sematicism.

Wouldn't worry too much about it, the peace symbol (that crow's foot one) was the symbol for a panzer division in WW2.

that is so childish... and it had me laughing like a drain!

PS - isn't the original symbol the opposite way round to the Nazi one?

I think the original peaceful Swastika was actually rotating in the other direction IIRC. Posisbly the Nazis turned it around?

A European arrest warrant has been issued for The Speaker of the House of Keys.

Not worried, just saddened -that a symbol for good has been abused in this way. A bit like watching Tiny BLiar in Parliament.

Yes and displayed it so it looked like a diamond shape as opposed to a square like most other did. The Aryan race from India was assumed to be the logical historical start point for the 'German master race' and so thats why the pinched an Indian symbol.

Tough. We won and freed most of Europe in the process.

And what exactly do you mean by "the English only show themselves up for what they are"?
