has anyone seen either as it's my Mums birthday next week and she wants to see one or other but I'm not sure which one I could actually sit through.

March of the Penguins is watchable enough, haven't seen Geisha.

I have read that Memoirs of a Geisha is quite slow but beautifully shot. Overall March of the Penguins has been getting better reviews but it depends whether you'd rather see a documentary or a feature.

Perhaps you could persuade your mum that 'Jarheads' is about jam making? That way you get to watch a war movie and er, your mum does too?

Just go to the pub for the middle hour and you'll find it an excellent film

Hmm, I take you didn't enjoy it then. I liked it, but then i like alot of Woody Allen stuff. Though I did watch it on a Sunday evening with little else to do.

It's partly set in the City of London near my workplace, which i found a bit depressing...

What I have heard is that the penguins one is OK but not up to BBC wildlife standards.
I know a few people who have read 'Memoir's' and really liked it, it does look beautiful.

Follow up - we did the Geisha Girls in the end. Bit slow to get going but actually really liked it - good story, well shot and quite stunned to discover that this way of life and the general way of life in Japan was just before WW2! I didn't know it was a Speilburg film and the music was really good, John Williams job so generally a thumbs up and best seen on a big screen rather than telly.

It's very lame, but alot of DVDs (usually the 12 rated ones) have "contains mild peril" printed on them now.

My sister thought it was cr*p. Haven't seen it myself but she found it it a very empty experience.

Your mum will enjoy Memoirs of a Geisha. It looks terrific. Mind you, any film written by an American man about a Japanese woman, set in Japan but filmed in California, starring Chinese actresses, and about a hooker transformed from niaf to knockout Cinderella fantasy, is about as authentically Japanese as those "Soshi" folding screens you can buy in Pier 1. It has a few compensations: the world's best actress is in it, Gong Li, slumming the role of wicked step-sister for a few dollars.

Your mum will surrender to it, like sitting in a well-upholstered sofa.

The Penguin movie is enchanting but its a documentary that should be on the telly narrated by David Attenborough.

I dunno. I thought Morgan Freeman did quite a good job. Of course, for me, the best part was the advert for "Happy Feet" in the beginning:

'Penguins' may have a warning about mild peril, but I think the warning regarding Geisha includes the term 'Emotional Intensity'!

(Which one is more scary!?)

To a man, the latter.
