What type of boat, motorboat, sailing boat for a start?

What do you want to do with it?

deffo let us know what you want to do with it.

Also really, really don't rule out a pre-owned boat, brand new boats often have a few foibles/features that it's best to let the first owner sort out & get one that's a couple of years old.

Thats a good point bga. It also generally means that you dont have to buy all the non standanrd features that are necessary. such as a plotter, instruments, more sails (if its aracing yacht) etc etc

Won't find much change short of £100k! Besides, its salesmen, you won't get an honest review. Try a magazine, one catering towards smaller boats. And look at a few online brokerages.

Rubbish.... there are plenty of boats at the Boat Show with cabins under £40k.....have you been there? The RYA who have a stand there offer impartial advice, surely the thing to do is collect advice from many sources and then make a decision.

Thanks guys for taking the time to reply.
Im looking for a Motor Boat with an overnight Cabin. But not sure if the budget would stretch to a twin 'Penta'.
Ive seen 100's of second hand boats on the net and honestly I dont know where to start.
We are seeking a reliable over night style Motor Boat.

It finishes this weekend, been on since the 6th.

TBH a second hand is just as good as a new one, but if you go the second hand route made sure that you have a decent marine surveying do a survey before you buy, it might cost £1500 but its money well spent and can save you alot of time and effort.

Was there yesterday. Saying that, I suppose it's quite easy to miss stuff, only one I saw was a Jenneau 20. Whereabouts where they? But in the end boats are like cars, best off asking the owners who've had to live with all the little niggles and so on.

First rule of boat ownership: Have a good safe mooring sorted out before you buy.

Second rule of boat ownership: If it's over 40ft You don't own the boat, the boat owns you.

Third rule of boat ownership: A boat is a lasrge hole in the water into which you throw all your money.

The way they have the show laid out it is easy to miss exhibitors...was far easier at Earls Court.
The YellowPenguin/Karnic stand was at the far end of the Power hall - ie furthest away from main entrance in the block one away from the wall...if that makes sense

Why do you want a smelly??? Get a proper boat

As for the under 40k there is a lot out there but you really are better going second hand - esp if it is your first boat. New boats will have stuff go wrong wtih them, its practically in the contract and if you're a new yachty then you are quite likely to get anally raped.

Have a look at YBW.com

Sail wise I'd go for a moody 336/31. They are an old design but damn reliable, built when the brits did it best (try an early to mid 90's model)

Motoring I know little apart from the ones I've skippered for delivery. Really does depend what size you're looking for. Probs can get a nice 25ft for about 20k. 30ft is about 38k (just by what friends have sold for in the past)

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS GET A SURVEY DONE...*shudders to think about osmosis..* and if you need someone to deliver it look no further.

Don't mean to be rude but have you taken your competant crew/dayskipper/VHF licence? Completely essential and legally necessary if you want to own a VHF (and you're a nonce if you don't..)

Mail me if you need any help

And the London boatshow usually isn't the place to go to look at stuff seriously - do it when its all a bit quieter and people will usually take you out on the sea as well. As for bargaining power on new boats the Southampton Boat Show is the way to go - get some cracking deals there especially if you go for the demo or show boat

Should of thought of trying to keep him away from the darkside, d'oh!
I've sailed both moody 36/31 and they were both great boats, the 36 sailed well I thought (though we werent exactly pushing it, it was while I did my day skipper and the instructor said we had to reef in a f2 when the boat was hardly heeling!)

NO SAILING UNDER CONDOR THIS TIME!

And why can't you park a car as well as you can a boat?

Meh, the darkside - got a load of abuse from some jumped up chav trying to sell stinkies at the boatshow. I soon saw him off by using words of more than one syllable

I love Moody's - we've been through three and they were all complete joys to sail and own. Now we've got Jenneau and I can't say I like it much but I'll never complain about having one

Reefing in a F2 *pansy* But the dayskipper was fun to do, I've got to do the yachtmaster practical now but have lost 1600 sea miles because I haven't done them in the right time frame..sigh..anyone for 40 trips to france and back?

Don't forget the old maxim:

You have two great days when you own a boat...

The day you buy it & the day you sell it!!!!

I'd rent! (look at the total costs, and work out a comparison based on how much you'll use her)
