Kelvedon Hatch - Nuclear Bunker
Discussion
I decided to go and look around Kelvedon Hatch today.

Seriously interesting and well worth the £5 per person tarrif. It is a really interesting look into a very scary side of history. Considering it was only very recently decommisioned (1994 IIRC) it's a very sobering trip but one well worth making.
I didn't take any pictures this time, but may well go back at some point for another look.
Has anyone else been here - or other decommisioned sites for that matter?
Phil

Yes, I've been there. It's a very interesting place - I found the video of Protect and Survive quite chilling, especially as it was such hopelessly useless advice..
I do wonder if Kelvedon and the other RSGs would have been of any practical use in a nuclear war since I'd assume the Russians knew where they were and would have singled them out for "treatment"..

One near to where I live, it is signposted 'secret nuclear bunker' which always amuses me.
fascinating to visit, there is a TV and radio studio there where they would have made broadcasts to the public in the event on an attack.
also interesting to see how everything is 'doubled up' so should one system fail the spare kicks in straight away.
rumour has it that there is still one in whitehall deep underground for the PM and cabinet which is still fully operational.

Wht would they bother? The sort of useless bureaucratic f**k up that was likely to be present in these places would have finished off the job for them nicely.
This is one of the hundreds of abandoned Royal Observer Corps bunkers that litter the countryside.
It is on a hill behind our house.
Have a look here for an interesting site about Cold War architecture.
As a child of the Cold War era I find this stuff absolutely fascinating, which probably means that I am a complete spod.

Handy, very handy
i remember when that one was first opened to the public. my parents were up from wales and we decided to pop down to ikea at thurrock, on the way, the M11 was shut (arresting bank robbers or something) so we were diverted onto the nearby roads. it was the highlight of our day to see these yellow AA arrows pointing the way to the "secret nuclear underground bunker", i seem to recall someone taking a pic of the sign and getting it published in private eye as well.

Wow, what an amazing place. I must visit there. This is the sort of place I would love to own if I win the Lottery.
It's on what was originally my cousins land. They bought the whole place for £140K in 1995 I believe. They've spent a lot getting it into the state it is now. I went in it when they first got it. Quite a scary place then.

You can. There's one for sale near Bath. Huge place underground at Corsham that came up for sale last month![]()
Is that the one that's on for about £150k?

The Corsham complex cost many, many millions to construct over 60 years ago....
