Nowt wrong with that.

Modern TG is a reflection on the mental state of the modern TV audience as much as anything else.
Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy much of current TG but I am old enough to remember TG in most of its earlier guises and enjoyed them too. I would just like to be treated like an intelligent human being by TV every now and then - not just assumed that I am a semi-brain dead, lager swilling couch slob (even if I am swilling lager on my couch on a Sunday evening).

TG went through various changes over its long life. My favourite era was probably about 1995/96 when Tiff, Clarkson and Quentin Wilson were all presenting the show - not to mention Tony Mason and his motorsport and rally reviews. It was cheekier than the Wollard/Goffey era but contained lots of useful information too.

In fact, I miss the spin off show "Top Gear Motorsport" much more than the old TG.

Edited to replace "Justin" with "Quintin" - I got my "Wilsons" mixed up - at least I didn't say "Harold".

Iv'e always been amazed that the bbc havn't bought the series' out on Dvd. If i woke up one day to find there was a new britanica edition like box set out you'd find me in the que at Ikea the very same day to buy... A new Shelf!

Clarkson for me is an excellent producer, a real man's man. With his Marmite superlatives and dry wit he reminds me of an era before speed cameras and speed kills.
Hammond for me is equally likeable. The loveable puppy of the group constantly wandering what that thing is wagging between his legs.
I think whereas Clarkson reminds me of an optic holding a bottle of 15 yr old malt whisky Hammond is more of a novelty schoolboy. You push down on his schoolboy cap and he urinates bacardi breezers.
The other guy with the long hair and one pair of shoes to fit all, he's more like a jar of picked eggs in a chippy.

Great videos, thanks.

I agree with Eric, as the programme has gone on through the decades, it has simply been a product of its time, as is the current series. The older stuff might look weak, but in its day it was as exciting as todays offering.

Also agree with Eric about the mid nineties, you would have Quentin telling you how to buy and run a Bentley or Rolls Royce on a working mans wage, then Chris Goffey giving us a mini documentary about Tatra followed by a road test of a UK spec T613/5. Then you would have Jeremy telling us why the newly introduced Vectra was complete garbage, and he would be absolutely correct in what he said, but folks didnt get what he meant, they thought he was talking about the car specifically, rather than the entire genre. Tiff would come along doing his regular 'slide it about this way and that way' showboating, but an on road test rather than the runway.

I reckon the early episodes were very much in the mould of 'Tomorrows World', but for cars, so they were bound to have an air of seventies/eighties cheesiness about them. I have loved the programme through all its incarnations.

I would like to see the current TG team do a 'Life on Mars' jobbie and go back to the seventies or eighties and check out the cars of the period in todays style, Hamster & May already wear the clothes for it

I must say I paid far more attention to TG when Clarkson joined, plus I like Quentin Wilson too. As for the box set, I'm in the IKea cue too.

I remember the episode in which Chris Goffey was reviewing some sort of Mazda, and the barely suppressed glee with which he expressed a regret that Mazda had not seen fit to install their new rotary engine - opportunites to say 'Wankel' on BBC Television were few and far between in those days, so he made the most if it.

i think it would be good, if on future series of top gear they have a regular slot with say, a car review from the past, or just clips from past programs.

UKTV = UKClarkson
Every month or 2 they go through JC Motorworld, complete days of Top Gear and the one where JC goes flying

oh my god... that program is horrendous... it's like the car equivalent of trainspotting...

one bit did make me laugh though (don't think it'd be broadcast on the bbc now!)

These are my fonder memories of TG... I haven't seen much of the new TG as i was never around on a sunday in the UK (always driving back to work) and although they have just started showing series 1 here in Aus, i haven't yet brought a tv up to ste so i don't watch it. The new shoes are good, but they lack something that i can't readily define. I would like to see more of the driving on roads, but i guess that doesn't sit too well in todays society!

They used to have a 'best of' older style Top Gear a couple of years ago, I think it was called 'Top Gear GTi', I remember it because I laughed out loud when Clarkson reviewed the Ford Escort in about 1990!
