Anyone got any specific recommendations?

Usually use Hertz but they are off-site so looking at all options. Dollar through Airline Network or Alamo seem best deals at the moment.

Rental will be 3 weeks in April.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I think they are much of a muchness. The only thing to do is check offers or if a UK Travel agency car-hire specilist can cut you a good deal.

We had a house in Orlando for a few years and always got the best deals from Alamo for a similar 3-5 week period. It's a bus over to their lot but easier to navigate to the main interstate (I90 I think!) than from the airport car parks. Hertz, in my experience, are always more expensive. The only downside is that if you're looking at a mid-size (Mondeo) car you get an Oldsmobile Alero (sp?), we always got one if we didn't need the mpv. A bit naff, but the 3.5 v6 can still shift. As usual, plan corners well in advance .

Thanks for those!

Always tended to use Hertz on business as they gave good service when registered as a No.1 customer.

Its gonna be MPV or SUV so planning for corners is a given...last year we started in a full size 4 door but having endured 3 days of trying to see around trucks/pickups/SUV's I decided if you can't beat 'em.....

IIRR all hire companies are off-airport in Orlando (was last there 8 years ago) and we went with Alamo, IMHO one of the best..they DO try harder, not like the guys in red!!!!

Hertz or Enterprise.

Enterprise will actually drop off and pick up the car at your hotel of choice if you don't feel like driving it to/from the airport (which can bea bit of a PITA since most hotels offer a shuttle)

These are only sales cubicles NOT the cars, the cars are all off-site and you've to take a shuttle bus to their pound....

Those car rental companies are on site. The cars are in the airport car park connected to the terminal, much more convenient to use these than those offsite. Very little difference in rates either.

I can, they're a very short (but sweaty) walk from the arrivals area. Was there this summer and it was very easy.

I'd reccomend a large SUV of 4x4 too - less likely to get rammed off the road as happened to one of our party (managed to be in the SUV's blind-spot while being infront of the dozy bint!).

Keep safe

Several rental companies are now onsite. When they redesigned the carpark they escrowed the first two levels (of B terminal parking I believe) for the rental companies.

I've got timeshare in Orlando and we tend to go there every year. We use Alamo, simply because the queues (or lines in American) are less. The worst for queues is Dollar.

Here's a tip. You have to wait for your luggage TWICE at Orlando, for reasons which beat me, on the second wait have one person waiting for your baggage and aonther sorting out the car hire, which is exactly one floor below the baggage reclaim area.

Thanks for reminding me of that! I remember that system now and you're right, it defies all logic doesn't it!

When did the luggage thing come about. We sold our place a year ago and don't remember that . Personally I prefered to go off-site. Getting the bus outside the door, leaving the group and luggage in the office while you drive the car to the office and load up/mapread/sweat where there's a bit of space.

I rented through Dollar's UK site when I went through Florida in October. Although initially the US site looks cheaper, those prices are only for 1 driver and doesn't offer any lever of insurance - by the time we'd take 1 car, added an extra driver and full insurance for the week, it had gone up from about $150 to over $400. Most US renters user their US credit cards to rent the vehicles which then provide full insurance on the vehicle - UK credit cards don't offer this so we need to take the extra insurance and it gets very expensive.

Through their UK site, they were offering the same car in an inclusive package with all the insurance, was many drivers as I'd like and a free tank for petrol for £160 for the week.

Well our family are Frequent fliers with Virgin (Premium) so it may just be with Virgin planes. That said, I flew out there at short notice with BA once and it was was the same again (two baggage pick-ups) - a right pain!
