Calling all Mechanical Ventilation Heat Exchanger Engineers?
Discussion
In what seems our eternal renovation of the house, we have decided to fit an HRV system. This one to be exact www.vent-axia.com/awwebstore/products/vacas/airminder.asp
There are multiple chimney flues running in the walls of the house and I was hoping to pass the duct work through these. Thing is I know bugger all about the subject (hey I just pull teeth for a living
)and after scouring the internet it appears that things can get very quickly out of hand with duct design calculations. Is there an empirical way to calculate duct diameter needed? I was hoping to just drop 150mm ducts down the relevant chimney flues for air extraction/input. I also need to use rectangular ducts to pass between the roof beams down into the flues and don't know what size to use here either.
Am I going to suck up house hold pets/friends and fire them into the garden or aspirate passing pigeons and dump them in a pile in the middle of the living room?
Any help much appreciated!

I have a disloclusal lower right 4th and a submandibular gland that needs extracting, what dose of anaesthetic should I give myself before reaching for the pliers?
I'm a mechanical ventilation heat exchanger engineer, but that's not relevant...
Right now answer the feckin' question

Why not just vent the chimneys, or better still, open them up?
Sounds like a solution looking for a problem tbh.
If I vent the chimneys things are just going to get very drafty. Also we won't be able to control the ventilation rate for summer/winter. It's an old house and we have invested a lot in polyurethane insulation for the roof and walls and don't want it to be for nothing. I'm also an asthma sufferer so the filters on the HRV will help that also. Also just "opening up the chimneys" won't do any good for getting rid of humidity from wet rooms.

Ooh I don't know that film but just looked it up and:
"In the most memorable torture scene, Szell uses his dental instruments for sadistic oral surgery to torture and extract information from Babe. Szell is the essence of evil and disturbingly effective during the torture, repeatedly asking Babe the question: Is it safe?"
Definately some useful stuff there, must go and buy it. Thanks!
