What is the RSPCA for?
Discussion
Not for rescuing sick animals apparently!
Was coming home along the A40 this afternoon when I saw a swan fly low across the carriageway and full pelt into side of a bridge. It was not a pretty sight and proceeded to flail around on the pavement, obviously in some distress. This was swiftly followed by it's cygnet which narrowly avoid traffic, only to fly into the curb. Nasty.
Got the national number for the RSPCA from directory enquiries which I assumed was the emergency number. Called it up but after listening to the recorded message about the charity's aims, negotiated the long-winded "press number" option system and sitting on hold for 5 minutes without even speaking to a real person I gave up (I was being charged an exorbitant fee for greensleeves too).
Called 118500 again and got the number of the local RSPCA place only to be greeted by yet another long-winded recorded message telling me to "for emergencies, call our national number" ie, the one I had tried already.
What a waste of f
king time. What is the bloody obsession with centralised call systems
If only they hadn't taken their eye off the ball and got so bloody political. They certainly won't be getting any charity from me.

We used to have a neighbour who had a big dog in quite a small house. She would leave it there all day on its own, from 7am till 8pm everyday, sometimes for up to 36 hours on its own. You could hear it scratching at the door and howling at night, but the RSPCA said they couldn't do anything as it hadn't been left on its own for over 48 hours!
If they just did their job without being so pc then it would be better for everyone and everything

The RSPCA - PC scum if you ask me.
Decided that as we had only recently moved (in 1999) that we couldn't have one of their dogs as we hadn't been there long enough.
Told to re-apply after 6 months.
Asked about the first dog we'd seen after 6m, told that it had been destroyed as there was no one who wanted to rehome him FFS...
How any supposed charity needs a £17 million pound HQ to support (approx) 200 animal inspectors nationwide, and pays its head of fundraising over £100,000 pa hasn't been investigated yet is beyond me. (Those figures are from my memory before the RSPCA decides to spend more donation money on a legal team to sue Ted for hosting this...)
Rant over - as you were...

In our experience, they don't do anything if you do get through to them anyway.
Ours too, our cat was chased up a tree and was stuck over 40 ft up, were they bovvered?
Yer average mog is a brilliant climber. Hunger always wins and they work out a way down eventually. Don't recall ever seeing any reports of cat skeleton up a tree!

You think the RSPCA are hard work, try and report someone sending child porn (with proper evidence)to the NSPCC... or plod come to that. the most frustrating/surreal experience I think I have had with any 'official agencies'. Our lives are run and controlled by 'agencies' with either official powers or very strong influence with the powers that be that spend more time doing nothing much apart from job creation and placing highly paid charity job ads in the guardian. FULL STOP my ass.

I would never give money to the NSPCC either. I've seen what the directors drive (or should I say are driven in).
Can you expand on this please? I have a standing order to them which Mrs K was quite keen I take out. If my money is being wee'd away I'd like to know about it!
After my bitterly disappointing experience with them, I cancelled our company's standing order donation to them. They spent a fortune on advertising (I know this) and other 'expenses'...
If you have the mind to, go their website page relating to 'Child Porn on the Internet' and see where/who they pass the buck to... a small group of oranisations that 'collate' this kind of activity in order to presumably submit annual 'statistics' to the 'powers that be'... The more you get to understand about these organisations, the more one realises that they are just paper tigers...
I had proper hard, submittable evidence that could nail a certain creep sending this stuff across the net. I even had a crime number (my inistitance) from plod, to the day (4 years ago), i've never heard a word from anyone. Sham.
I don't know anybody who likes animals with a good word for the rspce any more. They have a centralised switchboard and no human voice. No local numbers anymore. They kill plenty of healthy animals and they make adoption nigh on bloody impossible. Heck adopt a pet from a local sanctuary it's sooo much easier. I took a labrador there that I found on the street which had cigarette burns on it. They thought it was me, ffs! I gave up on them 10 years ago, they are effing useless but really into PR in a very big way.

Oh yes, very true. The team at our local sanctuary used to bend our ears about this regularly.

Yep. Easy. Lots of animals adopted by us over the years. It was all soft hearted Mrs C's idea. I think that there were about a dozen Gerbils, Two rats, Four dogs, and a box of baby mice. Not all at once, spread out over ten years. Only the last two dogs are still with us.

Like most big charities unfortunately.
My late father in law used to tell us about his experiences of working for some the blind charities. There was one he told about a sonar headset for blind people that apparently couldn't be made due to some political shinanegans between two different charities. I used to know some charity workers socially as well, they were bitterly disillusioned with their respective employers.RCSPA.
our first dog is a rescue dog from the rspca. the hoops you have to jump through the get an dog from them is silly, home visits (can see the point of that). but all the other crap is silly, forms to fill in, donations (use to be minimum £75) compatibility checks, follow up checks (still waiting after 6 years) ect..
when donating to the RCSPCA DO NOT give cash but donate tins of food that way at least the animals will benefit and not the coffers.

I agree, a few weeks ago my daughter phoned both the RSPCA and Cats protection people when she noticed kittens coming in and out of a old abondandoned building on her way to college - they simply wern't intrested in doing anything.
With regards to high salaries for top dogs (excuse the pun) at charities I had this discussion witho someone before. As much as I'm sure we would all love, people to do charitable work out of the goodness of their heart, the fact is that if you want the best generally you have to pay. Now, if you can get a marketing and PR guru as a director for your marketing department and he makes you an extra £1,000,000 in donations a month, yet his annual salary is 250k +car +exps, then to me, it still seems like a bargain.....
I have worked for charities before and seend that the top brass on on VERY good salaries, however, if the ultimate goal is to make more, and they DO make more for the charity then I would still donate.
However, if he is taking a 250k +car _exps and doing chuff all - feed him to the animals and get your moneies worth that way....

Our first (still with us) rabbit was from the RSPCA. We asked if they wanted a home visit before we took him. A year later, a woman came round to check on him. got all the ticks especially "has he got room to run". Slippy ran the entire length of the lounge, dining room, and kitchen. Stopped, then ran the whole way back (37 feet in each direction). The lady said "mmmm, he likes running, doesn't he?"
Saw two gullible mugs, more like. That rabbit is brighter than the pair of us, put together.
He's our mate, and we wouldn't be parted from him.
